Non starter
« on: 18 July 2006, 16:28 »
Hey folks, been lioving my 8v since i got her a few months ago and up until now had no problems
Arrived back this morning from 3 weeks offshore  went to fire her up and "click" nothing. Thought it could be the battery so neighbour got his jump leads out and still nothing, not even a sound when turning the key. Pushed her down the hill  and bumped no problem so took her for a spin to charge it up a bit but seems to have had no effect.
The car seems to have power, lights, radio etc all work fine so i shoulda guessed it wasnt that, its just that there isnt even a hint of trying to start when the key is turned fully and im no car techy so have no idea where to start looking for problems. I've read through a few starting problem threads here but havent seen any the same. any help much appreciated folks, hate not having my baby running.

could well be the solenoid, have you checked earths? also check that there is a 12V feed to the solenoid wire when you hold the key in crank position, not the main feed to the starter but the small wire to the solenoid as this is the one which energizes the solenoid and operates the starter.

Same thing happened to me after holiday. It is either a "switch" behind the ignition barrel, or the ignition barrel its self. Check to see of you get a live on the starter motor when you turn the key. if not then it is probably an ignition problem.

In answer to the original problem, more than likely the solenoid has corroded.
Disconnect the battery negative, then remove the leads off the starter motor solenoid, clean up the points with sandpaper until nice shiney metal.
That should solve your problem.
