If you lose grip when you accelerate hard from standstill then your tracking is probably out. As for cornering i would check all your shock absorbers for leakage. What is the general ride like?

Are all your tyre pressures bang on?
Not being funny, but with the roads as greasy as they are at the moment, I have the traction control light on mine lighting up in third on full throttle.  :o

Hmmm, puzzling one - that deffo doesn't right.

I brake pretty hard and pretty late, and the abs only kicks in when I'm really driving like a hooligan.

The only thing I can suggest is go to your local dealership, and take the service manager out in it (demand the service manager, not just anyone) - regardless of what their computer tells them, if you take him out and its all over the road under normal driving, then they'll have to investigate a bit more thoroughly than just plugging in the VAGCOM

It definitely doesn't sound right dude, hope is fixed and you can get back to full throttle soon  ;)

I am having a similar problem with mine but it only seems to occur when roads are greasy. Mine has been Revo'd so there is more torque than standard and I thought it was down to this. Dealer admitted that PD150 has had problems with the clutch master cylinder being suspect so they replaced this under warranty, which hasn't really helped, but has improved the gear change!
I have raced cars in the past and think the 'problem' is down to geometry and possibly the anti roll bars not being quite up to the job. I would be interested to hear if fitting Eibach or Neuspeed anti roll bars and changing the toe in settings would cure this problem. Clearly, there are potential warranty issues to be considered if we go this route.

Interesting point by Kniterider about the tyres. I am running Pirelli P6000's all round but these will need replacing in about 5000 miles. I have heard that Goodyear Eagle F1's are better for the MKIV Golf and would be interested to hear whether these are considered the DOG's or if there are any other makes of tyre which are particularly good in the wet and on greasy roads, to help cure the wheelspin in 3rd. I am running standard 205/55/16's on Montreal 2's.
