Just checked the tear properly and its not torn at all!!
I thought it was torn - and it certainly looked that way - after putting a long wooden CD holder in the car and accidently scraping it against the cloth. It turns out that a bit of plastic sheeting came off the CD holder, embedded itself into the fabric making it look like there was a 4 inch rip mark on the cloth. I just peeled it off.
I'd been driving around for a fortnight like that, looking at it every so often and getting stressed about it... all for nothing.
