Side indicator fixings?
« on: 10 July 2006, 09:54 »
Hi all,

Just got me Mk1 Cabrio back from spray shop and have been putting various bits and pieces, trim back on myself as it was done on the side as a favor.  All finished just about but the side indicators aren't sitting securely in the wings?  All I have is the indicator lense / cover and the wiring in the wing, am i missing a fixing of some sort?  I didn't take them off initialy so i'm a bit unsure.  Does anybody know?

Do the indicators themselves have a back on them ? There should be two holes in your wing, one bigger than the other and the indicators push in and then slide across slightly as the back of the indicator lense should have a small plastic hook that goes into hole. A bit hard to explain but it wil be fairly obvious what I'm saying when you look at them.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Yeah the indicators have a back on them and it's all exactly as you describe it's the units themself seem very lose when seated in the wing this is why i thought i may be missing something.  The wings are original, the front / smaller hole seems to be oversized for the hook on the lens cover.  I'll take another look later.

Are they the same indicators that came off ? The reason I ask is because I bought some allegedly mk1/mk2 from Awesome GTI once and they didn't fit well at all, they were quite loose and not snug to the paint work.

there should be a rubber gasket round the outside, is this present?  If it is then perhaps it has shrunk.  Do they have VW part numbers on them, if not get some cenuine ones or some good quality aftermarket jobbies from http://www.type-911.co.uk

Rubber gasket on the indicator lens around the small hook?
I haven't had time to have another look yet but will be working on car tomorrow so will check then.

it goes round the edge of the whole indicator, there should be a lip around the edge for it to sit in :)

thanks for the advice.  It turned out there are spring clips / fixings on the larger insert on the indicator lens (best i can describe it).  These had both been accidently snapped off when the lens was removed.  Got some new ones and all sitting pretty now :)
