Golf anniversary alloys, advice needed urgently

Hi Guys

I've recently bought and anniversary MK4 petrol No 862 with 30k on the clock. I love it but I have noticed the back wheels are starting to bubble under the laquer.

I know this is a common problem so I took it to VW who have said despite it been totally out of warranty they will replace them but only for sprayed version not polished as polished are no longer available.

What should I do?

Totally upto you, mate.  Although, the original colour looks amazing, they did corrode far too easily!  Suppose it depends how bad yours are, & how much the flaking/pitting/corroding bugs you!!

If it was me, I'd be inclined to get them re-done/have new ones by the dealer, as I love mint, untouched wheels.

But if you've got some spare cash, then maybe look into paying someone to re-furb your wheels in the closest colour they can to the original chrome??

At one stage, by their previous owner, my wheels were re-furbed in a black/silver colour & but do actually look quite close to the original chrome - Not quite as 'shiny', though.

Hi,

I am going through the exact same thing. When i took the car in to be MOT'd the service guy says " oh you have the corrosion problem on your wheels - that is a known fault and VW will replace them" I was like great but how come you only tell me this now?
Then i get a call to say that they don't do the same wheels anymore but that they do a similar one BUT that VW will only pay for 75% of the cost to replace them..... So after loads of arguing with the Garage - Derby dealer - i went in to look at the potential replacement and to be honest i think they will be ok ( my wheels are REALLY corroded) and even though i have had nothing but trouble with this dealer i say to go for it.
They are due to go on Tuesday!

Do you mind me asking if your dealer was going to make you pay towards them? I have my suspicions i may be being had - again...

From experiences I've heard, I think they're taking the pi55, TBH.  Every post I've read on the matter, results in wheels been swapped for nowt!  Tell 'em to whistle & do not hand over a penny.  Phone up VW HQ, if they won't do them completely F.O.C..  Make them aware that you are aware of the VW replacement scheme.  ie. The corroded wheels come into the dealers, get sent off & re-sprayed & then get given to the next unlucky Anni owner, & so on & so on.....

Don't take any nonsense, mate.
