16v misfire!!
« on: 07 July 2006, 20:11 »
Hi Guys,
I have a 16 valve mk3 done 84000 miles and i am having trouble with an intermittent missfire. I have changed all the service bits like plugs leads filters etc and the lamda sensor. I have used 2 different coil pack to check it wasn't that but it still has the problem. The car doesn't missfire for a day or two then it starts lasts few seconds or minutes then dissapears. Anyone have any idea ??

Let me know guys if anyone can yo'll can

Try changing the relays!

A very common problem on our cars that no garage seems to know about.

Either or both the ECU relay and the Fuel Injection relay. They are in the fuse box above the fuses.
Number 30 for the ECU and I think its 164 for the F I. check your Haynes manual.

They only cost about a tenner each. Do that and if it dont cure your problem then come back and ask again coz there are a few other things, but i'll bet its the relays!

I have a similar problem, dont know if it is misfiring as i have never had a car misfire, and it is so intermittent that whenever i show anyone, nothing happens!!!

When booting the car mainly but when cruising too, it just seems really hesitant and jumps/splutters... I seem to only get 120 out of it too... this is wrong surely? (2.0 16v).

I have changed all the typical electronics (Leads, plugs, coil) used VAG-COM (nothing found) and it still occurs.

Is this the same problem?

Hi

You must must must must (get the idea ) change the relays.
My 16v had an intermittent stutter / missfire and after changing over £400 worth of stuff it still f***ing
stuttered

Eventually after posting a 'plea' for help on here i was advised to change the ECU & Fuel Pump Relays.

I popped to VW and bough a ECU Relay for £11

How happy was i when after changing it in the car park i fired up my golf to hear a sweet sound.
A engine note like never before.

No probs at all now.

Good luck

I changed the ECU relay on a mk3 16v recently, it seemed to give the engine more power, anyone else noticed this?

I had this problem, and after many different pieces of advice, I took it ito the main Stealer who releived me of the best part of £300 for diagnostics, and the problem was still there, the advice i was given "sell it".
I found this thread, replaced the aforementioned relays, despite the Stealer advising me that this couldn't possibly fix the problem.
Strange though My motor  is going like it never has.

thank you all so much.

VW admitted that the ECU relay is a problem, they keep them in stock, which is rare for a car that is ten years old.

ive got this problem with mine..
just changed the Fuel Injection relay over which set me back £8 and it made the car more responcive which was nice...
but it still stutters at a certain rev range.. only sometimes though and coasting for a little while sorts it out..
guess ill change the ECU relay too

just to double check though.. misfiring etc.. does it do any damage at all? because the previous owned said it happened quite a bit so i just wanted to check

I have a misfire on my 16v only at low speed.  I've changed the spark plugs and the ECU relay, but the problem is still there. The geezer at the stealers said it can't be the fuel injection relay, otherwise the car wouldn't start.
So Len, if your reading this. help!
