MFA Stuff
« on: 06 July 2006, 15:56 »
Ok, i've been looking for a GTi, but they've all been sh!t, and not a patch on mine  So, i've kinda given up for a while... In the mean time there are some things i want to do to my car. One if these things is installing the MFA.

Does anyone know of

a) A good how to guide
b) A good place to get a working set of clocks.

Will i need to get a set of clocks, or a set of clocks and a load of sensors and senders etc...?

I currently have an 88 1.3, so its the fatter stalks, but with the earlier spec wiring. What sort of clocks do i need for this?

Thanks :)

I'm not sure whether is would be worth all the effort to install the clocks as I don't think you'd be able to get the MFA working with the 1.3

The MPG works using a combination of engine vacuum/speed even if you could get this working the parameters would be all wrong for the 1.3 so the figure meaningless.
I doubt you'll have the necessary sensor for the oil temp.
Average speed and distance travelled are calculated from the speedo cable (I think) but you've probably got a different ratio final drive/cable drive so again the reading would be meaningless.
You'd also need to fit the sensor behind the bumper for the external temp reading.

Sorry if it sounds like I've shot your idea down in flames but you'd be missing just about everything you need.
A set of clocks out of a 1.6 driver would give you the addition of a digital clock and rev counter for not too much hassle as another idea.

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

You need 2 plug GTI clocks, IIRC the 1.3 will have a 120mph speedo which means a set of 120mph MFA clocks should work perfectly fine as far as avg. speed/distance/time etc go.  To get the MPG working you just need to find a carby in your scrappy and pinch one of the many 'Y' splitters they have on em, and split off a line to the clocks from one of the feeds to the chunky brake servo pipe.
I found the mpg display to function very well and give me good accurate values on my 1.6 Driver :)

You'll also need an oil temp feed as well as an outside air feed, the outside air sensor can be found clipped to the inside of the passenger wing, just behind the bumper.  As for oil temp, this may be tricky on a 1.3 but you can get oil 't' pieces, deamon tweeks sell them, you need a M10x1 threaded one :)

Now the wiring on an earlier MK2 is a little tricky, but easily doable.  You need to gram the MFA stalk, then follow the wiring plug as far as you can.  If you're patient you should be able to follow 3 of the wires all the way to the dash plug, and the earth back to the earth 'claw' near the fusebox.  To make the outside & oil temps, cut the plug off a pre 90 GTI (so you can use the ends and splice them into your dash plugs) and run wires to the sensors.

Check out this handy-dandy guide for more detail, and the locations of all the pins:

Cheers John, i was almost sure it could be done, but seeing Tobz advice, i did have doubts!

Is the guide on Vortex the same as it would be for me, as he has a MK1 golf?

I'm not too bothered about the oil temperature, just outside temp and MPG... Dont suppose you have a picture of this Y splitter you mention, as i havent a clue what you mean!?

Anyone got a set of 2 plug clocks for sale with MFA??  Or am i better of going to a scrapyard and getting the whole lot, then i can get as much loom as possible?

Cheers :)

The wiring is all the same, my 89 Driver didnt blow up so it must be ok
The 'Y' splitter is just a plastic T piece that allows 3 vacuum hoses to be joined together, loads of cars have em, carby & digifant MK2s, passats etc.

if he has a late MK2 its even easier, the MFA loom is seperate and just runs to the rear of the fusebox :)
