Project - Mk1 Golf GTi G60 - help please
« on: 04 July 2006, 13:25 »
New to all of this....I have just purchased a really cool black Mk1 Golf GTi with a G60 turbo engine.

However, the braking system does not in anyway match the performance  Its currently running brakes are drilled 280mm discs on the front, using a TSR kit, and the car has mk2 golf gti rear disc brakes on a bias pedal box, seperate cylinders front/rear.

Anyone got an suggestions for improvig the braking system, I presume a servo will give it a lot more feel, anyone had simular experience?

the brake pedal is rock hard feels as though your foot is going to go through the floor, but the car feels as though its never going to stop, no bite or reaction, just slow gradual braking, you would never be able to lock up the tyres, just a bit worrying.

do you have a brake servo installed? sounds like if you do the hose that provides vacume to it isn't doing it's job leaving you unassisted brakes.

is that the kit where you keep the mk1 calipers ? bin that and use the mk2 calipers with the 280 discs. i think you just need the right caliper carrier adapters. 280 discs should be fine.

is it alex b's old car ?

Yes its Alex's old car - nice car, but need to sort out a fair few things.

It has no brake servo on it.

that could be half the reason why they're very hard. the elise has non-assisted brakes. took me a while to get use to it and now I can't stand servo assisted ones lol!

My other cars have superb brakes, so used to been able to stop very quickly.
