Fuel system on it is the same as mk2 Golf digifant so you may find a related problem that you can cross refer too.
At a guess, I would look at fuel pump/filter/clogging as it sounds like fuel starvation. We still have our little Polo GT, just sailed through the MOT without a single advisory.

Clutch will be exactly the same as a golf 1.1, 1.3. I concur with Corin about the starter motor.........real pig to get at!

Like i said, if you can be more detailed about the cutting out problem, is it when its hot/cold? will the car idle?
any details and i might be able to point you in the right direction...

okies...ill try..but ya kna wot im like corin (dont dare say anything)
rite..wen i first turned it over, it didn idle properly, but its done this a few times and has even just died...then t'other day, turned over, was rough but ok, reversed and drove it for about 1/2 mins and it just lost its revs and sort of spluttered along..but didn die completly...
but like i say, im sure i seen seem oil leaking (was late for work so didn have chance to look and aint been to check-sorry) which seemed to be drippin onto the alternator..
but also, not that im convinced this has any bearing, but it may, my alarm has started going off on its own accord, sumthing its never done.. :undecided:
i know clutch is on its way out and that hasnt help matters...but thats gettin sorted this week..
dunno if u can make any sense of that, but thanx for your input so far..

When it dies, does the car lose ALL power? like does all the dash go off as well?

The cam cover gasket often leaks on these cars(like most cars ), problem with the polo engine is the oil can leak directly onto the alternator, and this of course can cause electrical problems.
If the leak is bad, remove the alternator, and take the case off, see what condition its in, it might need to be renewed. However if you can, clean it up, and obviously replace the cam cover gasket.
If this isn't your problem then it sounds like its fuel related. As Rich said above, try replacing the fuel filter, or put some redex fuel cleaner in the tank.
