bodyword\airbrushing\paint help
« on: 03 July 2006, 20:17 »
some nice person has deceided to drag something sharp down the drivers door of my car about 5 inches long!  bastid

now I've used bodyfiller to fill the scratch all rubbed down and ready to paint.

I know the basics of painting not done much. I have just got an airbrush which can be used for automotive touch ups, which I want to use for this.

The scratch is near the winow going vertically own, hopefully I can blend it in.

The colour is reflex silver.

Now I'm thick when it comes to paint here. Where do I get the exact colour paint I need. I gather I need a primer, basecoat and lacquer. Also thinner.

Is there just one type of thinner I will need to thin the primer, basecoat and lacquer own ? or is there specific ones for lacquer ?

I would use chipsaway but I cant afford there fees, last time I used them I got some minor things but in all fairness quite a few costed around £300 so fair enough. I remeber the dude used a airbrush actually.

What brand of paint do I use so many to choose from ?

any advice is deinfitely welcome as I'm a newbie in this area.

Cheers

Your going to probably be using a 1k (one pack) set up so your paints mixed with cellulose thinner instead of a hardner like 2k. Try some local bodyshops and see if they can mix you 1/2 a litre. From what ive used halfords havent been bad but this was when i was using just matt paints so wasnt difficult and 1/2L of colour will only set you back £14. Try some practise tests on a scrap pannel as you dont want to mess up the real thing. When doing it take your time and make sure preperation and patience comes first. A bit of colour sanding should help you get a good finish.

Hi Golfgl.

I gave my loc al motor factor a call this morning. Asked him some questions about paint etc. Said I'll need a high build primer 1k as I'll end up rubbing and thing lesser off. Told me to rub down between every single coat. Does that sound about right ? (what grit do you rub down with? 1200?)

What I forgot to ask them is when I put the metalic on should I rub that down before I lacquer ?

The paint they sell is electra don't know how good this is. They said all paint are different some more firgiving than others. There are tons of brands. They said PPG and dupont are quite good for the beginner but they don't sell them. What do you reckon I should go with ? Obviously they said theres was good.

Got a scrap door to practice on no doubt will take many atempts

Hi

use Single pack paint, Standox is good, with standox thinners, best to use a slow thinner in this heat, fast in cold weather, you will only need a quarter litre, take yer car down to paint mixer so he can match it,  before you shoot the basecoat, put a thin coat of clear lacquer on first, this will help basecoat ,then shoot basecoat, dry with paint dryer, then shoot yer ready for use lacquer, load yer gun with blending lacquer and spray from outer to inner with a thin amount and the edge will blend in

there is more to it but thats the basics in a few words. :)

heres a before piccie of a bonnet and wing  with black magic paint. ( car had been keyed)

With the sanding keep it above 600 wet and dry. you will get a better finish starting off at 800 then moving down to something like 1200. Im pretty sure haflords is dupont but you would have to check instore. Have a look at this guide as im sure it will answer all the questions you want http://www.lrcars.fsnet.co.uk
And good luck with the project.

another thing is you'll probably need some compound or very very higt grit wet and dry to polish it up once yo'uve laquerd it. Id go with a g6 rubbing compound if its only a small area.

I cant remember if it tcut scratch remover or safe cut but its rubbish. Go for rubbing compound/ carplan cut metalic or s polish but be prepared to use it a few times as it isnt as abrasive as compound

compound doesnt cost that much really, i think some g6 or g3 is about £9 at halfrauds, but it  is the best option. T cut isnt really great for metallic colours because of the laquer.
