Wheel bolt size and taper ??
« on: 03 July 2006, 17:41 »
I have just ordered some nice BBS RA's, and would like some nice new shiny wheel bolts to go with them.
What size and taper are they??  :undecided:
Computer games don't affect kids, I mean if Pac Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive music.

M12x1.5
The bolt seating depends on the wheels, if they are std VW then they are likly to be ball/cone, if aftermarket they'll most likely be tapered.
Unless you know for sure, remove one of the bolts and stuff a load of bluetak into the bolt hole, pull it out and check the shape :)

And here are the part numbers of the correct McGard locking wheel nuts, pretty much the best on the market:
28028SU - cone/ball
27179SU - tapered

Edit: Roughly 26mm long for alloys, with a 17mm hex head

yes and no, BMW bolts happen to be the same thread as MK2 bolts, but with a tapered rather than a ball seating.
If you have aftermarket alloys with a tapered seat they're perfect, but if you have a set of std VW alloys with a ball seating they're no good.

On the same note, if you get a set of aftermarket alloys with a tapered seat, nick a set of wheel bolts off a BMW to fit them :)

I think i should be sorted, ordered some new McGard locking nuts and some new wheel bolts (both radius seat). Hopefully they will turn up at the same time as my RA's !!
