l don't think so, but it may be in some strange way linked to the fan, perhaps something to do with the fan over-run switch?  Perhaps the faulty switch was causing an earth problem or a power drain...  Doesn't sound to likly.  The short answer is I don't know :grin:

I have a theory that actually my car isn't really running hot and the fan is kicking in when needed. I noticed that my indicated oil temperature depends on what position the interior fan is set to!  For example, when the interior fan is off the indicated oil temp might be 100C - position 1 would be 102, 2 would be 104 and 3 would be 106C!!! It literally changes the very instant you touch the switch  I guess as the current/resistence changes somewhere. I have the fan on in the hot weaether and it looks like my engine is cooking - I turn it off and the engine looks fine and I'm cooking instead. Presumably the fan switch is unaffected by this nonsense and is kicking in when it probably should. What could cause all this nonsense? Poor earthing somewhere?

Yeah sounds like it, check the braided earth cable from the coil bracket to the side of the engine, and look under the dash under tray at any earth (brown) cables to make sure they haven't come adrift.  May be worth pressing on the clock plug in case it aint on all the way as well :)

All the earthing seems fine except for the missing strip on the bonnet edge. I guess I need to take it to an auto electrical place.

before you do that, take all the earth connections off in the engine bay and clean them up with a wire bruch/sandpaper till they're nice n shiny.  I'd also do the battery & alternator wires too while you're there :)
