VR6 - Fuel Consumption??
« on: 28 June 2006, 20:07 »
Hi again all.

My dear hubby is thinking about joining me in the world of VW (he's been eyeing up mine but he aint having it!  :smug:).

Anyways, hes thinking about a VR6 (see, gotta go one better now instead ) and he's wondering what you would get average MPG out of one - both normal round town and giving it some welly.

Im getting about 80miles to a tenner out of my 16v GTi. Im crap at MPG so for my benefit what would it be compared to that?

To be fair he's pretty good and doesnt boot his cars all over the place, maybe I should take some tips from him!      Na, im good really. But knowing the worst case scenario can only help.

Any info you can give us would be fab so as to help him in his desicion making about what to go for next! Whatever we decide, I get to drive it sometimes so its gotta be sumit good.

Cheers guys

I think its fair to say that VR6's are shocking on fuel unless you drive it like your having a driving lesson (and you wont)

Generally vr6's do drink fuel, i would say mid 20's around town, and low to mid 30's on the motorway(80mph or less )
Compared to a 16v, the vr6 is a fair bit more greedy.

Hmmm, perhaps we'll have to re-consider that option then as it would be his day-to-day car for work etc.

Oh well, he's happy with a Mk2/3 GTi so if a good one comes up fairly locally we can consider one of those! Just hope its not nicer than mine PMSL

Many thanks for your help guys, much appreciated

According to my trip 'pooter, I've averaged around 27MPG or so in mine over the last couple of hundred miles.  I do lots of shorter journeys, and mostly around town stuff, and don't drive that conservatively (could rag it a fair bit more, but could be a bit more efficient ).  According to your figures you're on around 36MPG (Just to make it easy I've assumed 10 litres for a tenner.), so your tenner at my fuel consumption would get about 60 miles .

Probably about right, as a tank is around 40 quid and 240Miles out of a tank isn't at all unrealistic.

Just to put it in perspective, I bought it off a mate who'd had it for 2 years or so, and just before I got it he was saying how he was almost going to break 300miles for a tank for the first time due to lots of easy-going motorway driving...  But last 1/4 - 1/8th tank was more standard city stuff so that knackered that chance...

Slap on an induction kit and floor it in second though, and you'll see (well, hear) why people like them....
