Dizzy Question.

I've just done a Dizzzy cap and rotor arm change and have a slight problem.

On removing the old dizzy cap, 2 of the 4 metal contacts where totally gone...good job I was changing it :wink:...the rotor arm took me 20 mines to prise off...and needed the spindle from the dizzy to be wire brushed as broke on removal.

On removal of the rotor arm, under the dust-cap where the spindle comes out, the metal surround is dented in...not meant to be like this I'm sure. When I put the new bits on, the car running makes a sound like the arm is catching the new metal contacts...I'm assuming that the dent I mentioned before is due to some nob trying to force the arm off...dented the surround and slightly bent the spindle so it spins off centre.

Is this fixable, or am I needing a new distributor...just wondering if anyone has had this happen to them before...and where can you get good 2nd hand dizzies from as can't see prices on GFS or Europarts, but think they are £100ish....and how easy is it to fit one?

take the cap off and get someone to turn the engine over while you watch the rotor arm, if it is indeed wobbling then another dizzy is in order unfortunatly!  I assume this is a 16v or VR if the arm was glued on?

If it isn't wobbling, then perhaps you just got the wrong cap/arm combo, AFAIK there are Ducieller & Bosch types.

Yep is a 16v didn't know they glued them on...no wonder I had probs lol.

Is defo the spindle as could hear it catching slightly. I'll run it until my re-con unit arrives...got a good one for £50 delivered from dismantles, GFS told me they don't do the 16v and it was main dealer...trouser fill time there :wink:

Sholud be ok to run it...I'm gonna run it on the drive for a while to get the contacts worn as have many miles to go and the fitting can't be done until the weekend :smiley:

Well it's a new dizzy needed  :angry:

The old cap and rotor arm was running an a slightly wharped spindle...so when I put a true arm and cap on it sent it more out of whack.

Took it to Storm Developments who are local to me and they checked it all out and showed me how the hall housing had been rubbed away and the magnet was beginning to show. They have sourced me a new(well recon) original dizzy for £100 with a full 12month gaurentee from a guy who rebuilds them for Storm...so the car is booked in for this to be done as well as an iol and filter change and a full inspection of everything(as got the car last week) as I've used Storm since they moved to Aldermaston and can't grumble at all...they looked after my bug so well including cam belts and all :smiley:

Will let you know how things go on Friday...I'm so looking forward to a clean bill of health so I can open him up before the trip to AMD to have a tune up as he's got a remap by them  :evil:
