still cutting out....please help!!
« on: 27 June 2006, 18:46 »
Any advice here would be great!!

My Valve is still cutting out under fairly hard braking and in traffic. Trying to re-start after it has cut out proves troubles. I have to leave it for about 5 mins before it will re-start. Its now becoming a bit dangerous as when braking for a r.bout it justd cuts out and with a load of cars behind im worried someone is going to hit me up the rear! So far i have changed....distributer, rotor arm, HT leads, spark plugs, battery, cleaned the coil terminals, put a few bottles of injector cleaner in over the past few thousand miles, new air filter box with vw air filter, breather pipes cleaned, timing set, fuel mixture set. Im now stuck and have not a clue what it could be. I think im going to have to take it in to a garage and hopefully they may find the problem. Any advice before i take it into a garage would be great.
Paul.

Indeed Mr Blue   It idles at 960-1040rpm according to the digi-rev counter. Trouble is will the garage know whats wrong with it, they could spend hours trying to find the problem and at the average of £40 an hour could work out vey expensive!!

Have you checked the brake servo hose and the one way valve(s) in the hose?

Have you replaced the fuel pump relay yet?

Indeed i have mate. The old one looked burnt out! I also run my valve on only 2 brands of petrol, either BP Ultimate (97) or Shell Optimax (98).
What do you think it could be rubjonny?? It cut out as i was taking my daughter to school this morning. I was in steady traffic at about 40mph behind a lorry. The lorry pulled over to let the traffic past but as people braked in front of me to let him pull over my car just cut out meaning i had a lot of angry people behind me for a few mins till my car re-started.

So it cut out as soon as you pressed the brake pedal?  Have you noticed the brakes have been a little dodgy since this started happening?

Mine did this a while ago and I cleaned my Throttle Body out as it was really gunked up... No doubt you have tried this but for the mean time I adapted my driving style so whilst breaking I had half a food over the throttle keeping it from going to idle...

Aparently Stealth Racing said it was a fault on the Throttle Body and it will need replacing soon or facing this issue every so often but it has calmed down after a thourough cleaning...

My golf is a Mk4 1.4 16v
Who wanna get halfed up by a half wit
Who got a gang a problems
And dont give a half sh!t b!tch

Luckily for us MK2 owners theres nothing on the t'body to go wrong, so they just need cleaning out now & again.  Good plan :)

Your MK4 t'body probably has a throttle position sensor in it, very expensive to replace

I'd connect up a remote engine starter and bring an old spark plug with me at all times. The remote starter is just a switch that joins the starter straight to the battery and lets you turn the engine over while you have your head under the bonnet. (  Only costs £9 ; http://82.165.33.164/product.asp?u=1313250N60944.1563585401&pnid=281&deptid=13 ) Leave it connected up secured in the engine bay...Next time it cuts out, pull over, lift the bonnet,  pull off a plug lead and put the old spark plug in, earth the plug and hit the remote starter and see if you have a spark at the plug.  Then at least you'll know if its a fuel or ignition problem.

The fact that it starts after a few mins suggests that its a fuel vapour locking problem...when it cools down a bit it starts cause the vapour condenses.  This could be caused by the fuel pressure regulator..on the end of the fule relay.  You could ask the garage to measure the fuel pressure..there's a port on the end of teh fule rail for doing this.
