Mk3 16v GTI Gearbox question??
« on: 23 June 2006, 17:28 »
Hi there, I've found a great car that I'm hopefully going to get on Monday. I do have a question though...the gearbox appears tight, but when the gear lever is in say 1st, it does move about 1-1/2 inches to the side if you wiggle it. I'ts the same in all of the gears so my thoughts are that the box is ok, just whatever the lever is attached to to find the gears is a bit loose.

Could this be the linkage being worn/loose, and if so is it easy/cheap to repair.

Cheers,

Simon.

it's cable change so no linkages to wear out, but cables can stretch etc. where does the clutch bite? that could make a gearbox tight if it's not quite disengaging properly...

Sorry...I meant tight as is when the gear is located you don't get any play...so feels nice...the gear lever does move about a bit. Had a similar prob on the mk2 and they replaced some rubber washers??? and it took the play from the lever away.

Clutch bites 1/4 way to 1/2 way and appears to be releasing fine...no odd noises from underneath.

it's the selector part of the gearbox. the cables attach to it under the bonnet. if you pop it into gear and wiggle those you'll see the stick moving inside the car.

my first gearbox was terrible for doing that. the new one that was recently rebuilt has no play in it so I'm expecting it to be like a new car :)

The selector part can be changed, but I've never done one before and I've been told it's quite fiddley and if you're not carefull the gubbins can spew everywhere.

Cheers for that Dizzie...that's the bit I meant :embarassed:

I'm off to storm later today...this should read tomorrow...but one of my Kitties has decided that it's 3.03am and I should be up playing with her ...so I'll see what they say there as they have looked after me so well with the bug...and as they specialise in Mk2-4s the this should be easy for them

Cheers for all the info peeps
