HELP!!!! new GTI startup problems
« on: 22 June 2006, 14:38 »
Hi everyone and thankyou in advance for any help you can provide for my problem.

I have just bought a nice 96 gti 8V which seemed fine at the time of purchase. I had been driving it around for about 2 weeks no problem but now when I try and start it, it will not start unless I put my foot on the throttle at the same time otherwise it just cuts out. The problem is definatly worse when cold. Can anybody help.

It also squeaks when turning with full lock on.

alright.

the squealing is probably a loose power steering belt.

not sure about the starting thing

Sounds like an issue with the ECU coolant temp sensor.  AFAIK on a MK3 it is combined with the gauge sender, so probably wont be cheap.  Get on the phone to your VW parts guy :)

just realized as well that the temperature for the water on the computer does not change. I just came flying down the back roads from work and the temperature never read above 13 degrees.

Sounds like a sensor issue then, but also you might want to check out the thermostat too, run the engine from cold and feel the bottom hose, it should stay stone cold then start getting warm when the gauge gets to about half.  If it gets lukewarm almost straight away its stuck open or missing :)

What do you mean by computer ? Are you takling about the MFA ? If so that doesnt measure water temperature , only the outside temperature and oil temp [ which only starts reading at about 50 degrees ] .

   I am a numb skull. Scratch my last comment, was reading the outside air temperature thinking it was the water (i'll get my coat). the engine temperature gauge with the instruments is reading as it should, is this reading taken from the same sensor.  Do you still think that this is a sensor issue. Got a price of £9.24 for the part.
