A question of devotion....
« on: 21 June 2006, 21:10 »
Hello one and all from a new member. I'm writing as someone who's always used Hondas. At the moment I drive a Civic VTI, which in 8 years has not failed once. I'm looking for a new hot hatch, and the Golf GTI is an obvious contender. However, having read the press long term tests, and read what you guys have to say on the forum, the question has to be "Why do you guys put up with the many niggly glitches and poor dealers?" Is this just a way of life in VW ownership? I love peformance driving as much as the next mortal, but I ain't gonna put up with arrogant and undereducated dealers when lumped with an unreliable product.....

very good question mate, i don'tknow what it is about vws that hooks you the minute you have owned one, i guess it becomes like an obsession. It is quite uncanny in my eyes why i don't hate them as there is always something to sort on it. I guess its the feeling of ownership and a project for many. If i were you now though i would stick with Honda. hats my 2 pence worht anyway.
i must buy a new car!

I don't think that they are unreliable - it's just that you expect prerfection for your dollar and we also know that UK dealers don't give a feck in the workshops - go take a look in your honda garage for a hour and you will be shocled at the carry on!

PLUS I think that if your dealership is in a busy city then you have less chance of real attention to detail.

PLUS (2) you just love the cars!

I suppose its just one of them things that if you are into VW then you get the car regardless of the service form the dealer. I dont think that there are any major issues with the mark 5 just careless dealers and dealership mechanics. My mate used to be a dealership mechanic and he is a cowboy at the best of ties, bodge city, its the same everywhere you go. But because VW have always had a good reputation for having impecable reliability you are surprised that you dont recieve perfection once you part with your hard earned £20k or so!

thanks doc, its a tidy little car to be honest only bought it as a run around till the valver sees the light of day again but have become attached to it!! , if you go to the main page and go on past events and look down the pics that jv took at Inters there is a good pic of it from a front angle after it had a good t-cut and polish and some back to black too!
