Golfing Problem.
« on: 20 June 2006, 18:11 »
Hey guys and gals, I was wondering if you could help me out.

I recently got my hands on a standard '88 MKII Golf, and a free Pioneer DEH-P3500MP Head Unit. Now, I've removed the stock casette deck, and plugged all the connections into the ISO block that came with the Pioneer unit, but it doesn't want to work. The tape deck still works when I put that back in, so I was wondering if any of you guys might know / have an idea what's up with it? The fuse is fine I checked that, and the wiring seems to be fine, otherwise my casette deck would be dead too..

Any help would be hugely appreciated, as I have a long 'ol journey to make on Friday, and I really don't want to do it in silence..

Cheers in advance.. xx

I know this is a stupid question, but in my past experience it hadden't been connected. When headunits are brand new in the box from the factory the red and yellow wires aren't connected so that when you get them you can choose to wire them up permanant live or switched ignition. also some cars work backwards so you have to wire the red to the yellow and visa versa.

so are the red and yellow wires connected?

The VW wiring blocks are wired the opposite way round to most modern head units, plus the ignition live wire is normally not present.
You'll need to run both red & yellow wires to the VW red wire using the spade/bullet terminals like Dizzie said :)

Ok I've swapped the red and yellow wire around, but still it's nothing on the new HU. The old casette unit still works with the swapped wires though.. Am I being totally oblivious to something really simple?

That is what you meant with wire swapping, right?

Man, why can't things ever be easy for me?

right what you need to do, is join both the red & yellow wire on the HU side, to the red wire on the plug side.  Basically you only have 1 live feed from the Golf plug, and the stereo needs both a live & an ignition live, so you have to splice both into the live wire from the Golf plug :)

I have a both switched live and a permanent live in mine, I should know this because I hard wired the stereo in with bullet crimps. Bugger these blocks :)

Riiight I'm tempted to go try this out now, but as it's almost 11pm, and raining, I don't think I will. I know, I'll try it before work tomorrow. Sorted plan.

On the offchance that this doesn't work.. I'll either go get it fitted for free in Halfrauds, or buy a new unit maybe. f**k, student income rates are the worst.

Yeah that's what I was thinking.. But the mates mum I got it off assured me it was in full working order before I took it our of her R5. Also robbed some speakers that as far as I'm aware are the perfect size for the dashboard mounts. Stoked I say. Just fitting them's gonna be a pain in the arse.

All-f**kin-right, RubJohnny, I thank you, as now it all works.

Spent about an hour getting the dash speakers out, only to find the ones i have dont fit, so off to somewhere to get some. (anyone recommend a place to get? Web deal maybe? And are they 3.5" speakers in the dash?)

Ahh so many questions, but so many thanks for the dudes who helped.
