GTI 1.8T acceleration problem
« on: 18 June 2006, 09:11 »
Hi Guys
Dont know if anyone will be able to help but I have a problem on my car and thought I'd pick some of your brains. The problem is that sometimes when I put my foot down hard it feels like I'm pumping the accelerator or the turbo is "pulsing". Its hard to describe but the acceleration isnt a smooth build up like it should be but pulls then backs off pulls then backs off ect. Its not doing it all the time but it's becoming more common. I've heard that there is a common problem with the gate on these golfs, could it be that? I'm not a mechanic so I've no idea really I just thought I'd post here first to see if anyone else had a similar problem. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks very much mate. I'll have a look into that. Can anyone describe in  more detail the symptoms that a faulty MAF sensor causes?

I just had my MAF replaced.
Sometimes the car would run just fine but then at other times you'd put your foot down, the engine would pick up speed then level off (sometimes slow down) and then suddenly it would take off again and you'd be propelled forwards at full power.

Your problem does indeed sound a lot like I had. When you idle does it fluctuate between 600-1200rpm?
Is so, just try disconnecting the MAF (it's a 5 second job and no tools needed), if it sits quite steady, you know thats the problem.

sounds like the above (maf) or your divertor valve on its way out.... do a search on the forum for divertor valve or similar and it should come up... both common mk4 problems.. or could be the coil packs starting to fail pending on the year...

thanks very much people for all your input. Your symptoms do indeed sound the same. I do sometimes have a slight idle problem so I think this is highly likely to be it. My car was imported from sweden (uk spec), it was registered over here in Feb 02 so it was prob manufactured 01, was this a year that the coil packs fail?

Much appriciated

I had acceleration problems, my car struggled to rev past 5000rpm, replaced the MAF and now she runs like a dream!

the MAF is the worst invention ever. I'd put my money on it being the cause of your problems.

Well, over the w/e I had a major service on my car and surprise surprise, my car didn't have the turbo problem . No problems were reported back to me except that there was an excessive amount of oil in my intercooler  which the mechanic mopped up with tissue. Has anyone ever heard of this before? The guy who done my service works at a local stealership and he hasnt seen it before although he did me a good price on the full service and cam belt change with the stealership stamp!!
