Dilemma
« on: 15 June 2006, 14:04 »
I think thats how you spell it above... my speel chkkr int workin..!

Anyway... Here is the info

I want to sell my Golf but there are a few things wrong with it, and I dont know if I should shift it like they are or get them repaired and then sell it... Advice please

The current issues are:

Engine (first and foremost) it smokes every now and again esp when lifting off and then putting the power down, There is no mayo under the oil filler cap and no oil in the water. When it smokes there is a slight power loss but then this is restored with in seconds after the smoke stops...

BodyWork Apart from the odd dent here and there... The main dent is on the rear driver side arch (Thanks to a scooby who went into the side) Its on a small dent but more a crease and have been quoted 500 for the repair in Addition to this two nasty key marks either side on the doors.

MOT and TAX Just coming up for renewal but will get these out of the way

Milage just done 100,000

and Last

Its a T Reg 1999 Mk4 1.4 16v in Satin Silver, With Momo Limited Ed GTR Allys 17inch all tyres in good nick two new front ones just fitted

I was thinkin about £2000 for it as it is... What do you think? Do I repair or Bodge it and Scarper?

Cheers

I doubt anyone on a Golf forum is going to tell you to bodge it and scarper!

Either do it up properly and sell it properly for a decent price or advertise it with the problems and there's no comeback.

It's up to you but bodge and scarper shouldn't be an option tbh.
......now officially dubless.

Well not in a sence of Bodge It and Scarper proper but if I were to declare there is minor engine work I mean surely its up to the buyer to test drive and decide for themselfs... I go to look at Second hand mk2's a few time in the past couple of weeks who have reported no engine probs and when I drove it.. it smoked...

The buyers responsiblity to check fair if they notice and ask I will say but if I sank money into an already ageing mk4 1.4 would I get it back? Not so sure which is why I was askin

Ummmmm small point but have you actually checked your oil level? If its overfull it will send out excess under load.

The attitude is always buyer beware mate so why should you worry?

Yeah I checked that what happens is... Fill the Oil to midway gradient level not full not on the empty part of gradient...

Start driving after about 30 mins or so (warmed up) in 5th gear light accellerator movements at say 50mph doing about 2500rpm... slow down to 40mph for something now at 2000rpm... Accelerate harder back up to 50mph Pooof! Blue smoke for about 2 seconds then it starts accelerating back up to 50

It will do this in pretty much every gear when the car has been rolling freely with light accelerator moments... When accelerating sometimes a like a ratcheting sounds comes from the engine whilst smoke is coming out then it stops and so does the smoke... I have been told it could be valve stems but the engine would need pressure checking aparently...

Blue smoke will continue intermittently till all the oil gets used up and drops to a certain point below the gradient then bingo it dosnt smoke anymore...

Yes buyer beware on every car but sometimes I let my guilt take hold lol

Yeah Valve Guides was also mentioned... The only other option I have is to keep it do the work and turn it into something special but for what a 1.8 20vT engine would cost it would be cheaper to invest in a Mk4 Gti and do that up...

Still want a Mk2 tho hehe

Yeah Dealers are Dealers and I wouldnt think twice that they would try to sell me something I dont want I saw this one garage selling a Mk2 GTi for 3000! To be honest it did say it was mint but even so I have seen some GTi's on AutoTrader at about 1600 and they are clean as anything... All in the test drive tho

Do a compression test, if all OK, change the valve stem seals, easy job!... if it still smokes, it probably needs new valve guides..ouch!
