Mk3 16v In Metallic Black Full Detail

Having read lots of posts on the detailing world website (www.detailingworld.co.uk) I arranged to do a full detail on my black mk3 on saturday just gone with a chap who goes by the name of Brazo.

Started at 8:30 in the morning to beat the heat (was very hot) here's the order of events:

Wash/wax wheels dress tyres
Clay whole car (first time, very impressed with the amount of crud removed especially from the roof)
Mask whole car (trim/windows etc) which left this:



Brazo then set to work with a rotary polisher (makita) with Menzerna Intense Polish then Final Polish II followed by Porter Cable for minor hologram removal, heres a shot of the bonnet with a circle done at the front, look at all the swirls around it!:

The whole thing took up the best part of a day, partly because we stopped halfway to watch the England match and partly because VW paint is notoriously hard making it time consuming to get good results.

It was well worth the time and effort though as you can see it's looking very clean now and with a good wash/wax technique it should remain so.

hmm.. having a car the exacts same colour.. i wanna know.. how can i get this done?! lol

I know it took a whole day but this really is the way forward if you want to keep your car looking as intended.

Working by hand is ok in the short time but you really only mask any swirls/scratches, to completely remove you need to get it done professionally with a rotary/porter cable which cuts back teh clear coat where those nasty cobwebs are hiding!

Theres a section on the detailing world website where you can find someone near you who will do your car, should be looking at around £100-120 to do the whole car.

Looks fantastic.

As the owner of 3 black cars, how exactly do you stop getting swirls? what causes them etc?
I thought one of our cars was perfect until the sun shone on one side and it was all swrily and hazy

The biggest offenders i think are:

1. Using sponges to wash car
2. Drying with a chamois
3. Going through commerical car washes

still use a sponge.. but i've now got a "flash" auto dry system.. so no more chamois

You're murdering your paintwork using a sponge mate, thats what gives you all those nasty swirls, nothing worse in Black magic paint.

Use a Wash mitt rather than a sponge, you can get them for as little as a few quid at wilkinsons or better ones for around a tenner from halfords, should last ages though and they are much better than a sponge as they take any dirt/grit away from the surface as you're washing.

Also have you tried using clay? It really is excellent stuff, only learned about it a few weeks ago, had a go at the weekend and it removes so much stuff you wouldn't believe, leaves a nice smooth finish and only needs doing once or twice a year.
