RED Paint Fade... PLEASE HELP!
« on: 10 June 2006, 10:25 »
Hello Everyone.

I have a problem and would really appreciate some advice.

I am looking to purchase a Tornado RED Mk5 GTI but I have been told that the paint will fade after a few years.

Is this true?
How bad will it fade?
Should I avoid RED and go for another colour?

Thank you for your help.

Batman.

mate it's not a 20yr old car, modern cars are painted with more durable water based paints, don't worry about it, because, A: it won't happen and B: it'll be in about 20yrs if it does and i'm sure you may have changed it by then......

As far as I know VW have addressed this issue and it doesn't happen anymore...
Mk1 GTI Campaign, Mk5 GTI Edition 30, Mk6 GTI (Coming Soon...)

I think red will always be more prone to fading, but keeping it well waxed will postpone any effects. Old red cars are a nightmare.

However, I'd have thought you could park it in bright sunshine and never polish it and it should be fine in a few years - in 10-15 maybe not, but who cares about what'll happen to it in 2020?

Although I agree with above comments quoting fading tends to happen on 20 year old cars, water based paint is in fact less duarable than the current type.
