Is it just me or Golf lights Crap
« on: 11 December 2003, 22:36 »
Hey

I came home the back roads the other night and had to have all my lights on to see where i was going, (fog lights, full beam) I even thought the level was set wrong but it was'nt.  Does anyone know whether its worth changing to Xenon bulb upgrade kit, or can you have the HID kit retro fitted,   has anyone got the HID set fitted to theirs, this is only thing that is pissing me off on a thoroughly good car, (oh and the sh!t wiper blades that smear even though the car is only 2 weeks old, and VW 's answer was "oh they do wear" and still woud'nt change them until i told them that LloydsTSB's fleet manager may decide to change where thy purchase therir car from)

Now you mention it; you're right, the light's are Crap.  Now you've brought the subject up - On a few occasions whilst driving down dodgy dark places, I have to squint sometimes to see what's ahead.  (Then I remember to take my shades off  :D - )

Have you ever driven along and been blinded by the light (Manfred Manns Earthband) by oncoming traffic and thought that everybody else is driving with their high beams on and can't be bothered to turn them off?  Maybe the night's are just getting darker.

Would be good to know though if the xenons are worth the money.

I am currently running aftermarket bulbs which are a little on the illegal side of high wattage, and I still think my lights are pretty poor - they're better than they were, but by no means are they great.

I am convinced that the only way to go is to have proper HID headlamps.

I was chatting about this to a buddy of mine yesterday, who has fitted an aftermarket set to his Astra Turbo Cabriolet. This is the second set he has fitted, after he did the same to his MY01 Imprezza (to get rid of its bug eyes!!!)

Apparently aftermarket kits are only legal if your headlamps are self levelling and you have headlight washers in place also - some thing to with refraction of light from the lense, I'm not sure, but anyone who spends ?400 ish on a kit and does so without headlamp washers in pace risks getting busted.

On the plus side, they give awesome, awesome light and look teriffic!!!

really great kits, very easy to fit

The spec of the powerbulbs looks pretty good.

HIDs are definately the way foward as the burning temperature is much higher and is actually the same sunlight! (I know a few things about metal halide bulbs as I'm a brand manager for a company that sells ?600 mountain bike lights with HID bulbs).

Due to the way these bulbs work, you can't dim them (well you can but its bloody difficult) so they have to dip automatically to be road legal.

I remember seeing an advert for a kit in Performance VW for 350 quid but if its a DIY kit I wouldn't fancy fitting it - those bulbs need a kick of 6000 volts to get them going!

I agree that the lights are seriously crap on the MkIV Golf. I upgraded to the Philips Vision Plus which are brighter, but do not increase the length of the beam, which is needed. A real ba...rd to fit with the bumper left on, by the way. I emailed 'rustynuts' and he doesn't reckon his loom will make much difference to the MKIV and could inavlidate any warranty on the newer cars. Is anyone running 100W bulbs on their MKIV and if so does it make a big difference and will it sit OK with the standard loom? (Of course ocifer, I mean 100W bulbs for off road use)!

You shouldn't have any problems dude, I have a friend has been running 100watt jobbies for three months now with no visible damage to headlight reflectors ;)
