Quick progress update. Dropped the car off today and the service manager had no problems letting me know that all of those faults will be put right without any issue, including the door which simply requires realignment. As for the steering rack issue they have already done this for two other customers and will have to order a rack in from Germany if they don't already have one in stock, which could take 3-4months if ordered!

Anyway, at least all will get sorted and my mind is now at ease a little. Just hope they don't muck anything else up while they have the car!

And guess what I got for my loan car -  a bloddy Touran - at first I thought the service advisor said Tourag (and I got terribly excited ) but she looked at me thinking why the big grin on my face and then she reiterated "its a people carrier - sorry but that was the only vehicle available today"

Another update - service advisor has told me that the steering rack is due to something else and will not need a whole new rack as orignally envisaged - so that's ok. Now..on the misaligned door issue she told me that the technician was aware of this on other 3 door golfs and it seems to be a "problem" only affecting the drivers side door. Anyone else have this problem??

Anyway, she told me that this was a design affect and nothing that would be covered by warranty. She was telling me that since other 3 door golfs had the same that perhaps I could accept this as design feature.

YEAH RIGHT  I told her that the door being misaligned is not a design feature or something but rather a design fault. She said that it wasn't anything they could do becasue of they did any adjustments the rest of the door would go out of kilter.

I told them that this was unacceptable and that as it was a quality issue and that  I would seek a refund of my money or an exchange if the door cannot be put right. At that point the service advisor admitted that she would not like it if she had spent £22K on a GTI to find that problem with the door and said that she would ask bodyshop to have a look at it instead.

I wrote a long email to the sales manager who sold me that car threatening to seek an exchange if the door could not be put right etc...and he wrote back to say that his very best technician is investigating the door and that he is good at dealing with difficult and "sensitive" issues!

I will get an update on Monday to find out what they can do. From what I have seen on the door it appears that the skin has come away from the frame and if you push this back in with your fingers everything seems to align up again. Perhaps some spot welding may be required or something...but who knows..I ain't no bodyshop expert.

I wonder if the same shoddy workmanship on these 3 door golf's is a prevalent problem with other 3 door golf GTI's or other models??

I have had no such problem

BUT ask for another car NOW then when one comes in be it 1 month or 1 year they will have to honour the 30 day thingy.

If your car was bought on finance then you can get in touch with them re: quality issues.

Good luck and stand by your guns!

I picked up my new GTI last week, after a very long wait I might add. Drivers side door slightly out of alignment, rattle from above where the Sat Nav sits and that's it. The door was sorted by the dealer as I waited and the rattle went away - although it may return I suppose. The car has now done 300 miles from new, so early days... the hi fi had me worried afer what I'd read on this forum - mines really good! I did have uprated VW speakers fitted in the front and I do have the latest sat nav in my car - apparently they've only recently upgraded the spec of it and I got lucky with my build to get the new version. At any rate - it sounds great and I've just traded my BOSE equiped TT for the GTI - the sound quality of my new VW is just a good as the Audi was. So, I'm a happy bunny with my new GTI

I HAVE HAD MY GOLF GTI FOR ALMOST AYEAR KNOW,I NOTICED MY DRIVERS SIDE DOOR DOES NOT MATCH UP CORRECTLY AND MINE IS A 5 DOOR , BUT DOES NOT BOTHER ME THAT MUCH. THE ONLY OTHER NIGGLES I HAVE HAD ARE A NEW WINSCREEN WASHER PUMP MOTOR FITTED , EVERYTHING ELSE BEEN SPOT ON. THE ONLY THING THAT BUGS ME IS THE MILEAGE IAM GETTING ON MY GTI COMPARED TO MY OLD GOLF GTDI 150 BUT THAT EXTRA MONEY SPENT IS WELL WORTH IT  WHEN IT PUTS THAT SMILE ON YOUR FACE.

I noticed my passenger door slightly out of alignment...was about to make a fuss about it, when I looked at a few more 3dr GTIs they had waiting for collection...and none of them had perfect alignment on the doors!...have to say some of the panel gaps are pretty bad on some cars...mine is much better than some..so I shouldn't get too annoyed..so much for laser alignment that  the factory supposedly uses..

I'll let them maybe have a go at correcting it a the first service....if I wanted them all fixed they'd be there all year!

Well my GTI boot was misaligned but doesn't really bother me too much... especially after looking at the pics of Doc's R32 - that looked really bad.

Finally got my car back yesterday. The CD player is fixed - it wasn't working becasue the previous owner had an ipod connection overriding the CD, so I told the VW guys take the damn thing off as I still like my cd's

The leather seat which had a loose flap at the bottom has been fixed on again.

The steering wheel creaking noise to the left has now been rectified by changing the struts on the mounts.

As for the door they did a pretty good job of closing the hugh canyon and is a marked improvement from before, although still not perfect for a £22K car! But I've seen other 3 door golfs and some have good door alignment and other's are off. It seems to be a bit of hit and miss at the factory when doing the doors!!

Got a full tank of petrol for the inconvience - wow wee! Anyway, all of these niggles should have been put right before the car was presented for sale..so not very professional of VW Martins in Basingstoke, but good after sales service nevertheless. They did get all the issues dealt with in the end..despite the threats over not being able to fix the door casue it was a design feature!!!

Overall happy with the service and so glad I didn't have to go through any rigmour of complaining constantly - which is so exhausting!
