Another update - service advisor has told me that the steering rack is due to something else and will not need a whole new rack as orignally envisaged - so that's ok. Now..on the misaligned door issue she told me that the technician was aware of this on other 3 door golfs and it seems to be a "problem" only affecting the drivers side door. Anyone else have this problem??
Anyway, she told me that this was a design affect and nothing that would be covered by warranty. She was telling me that since other 3 door golfs had the same that perhaps I could accept this as design feature.
YEAH RIGHT

I told her that the door being misaligned is not a design feature or something but rather a design fault. She said that it wasn't anything they could do becasue of they did any adjustments the rest of the door would go out of kilter.
I told them that this was unacceptable and that as it was a quality issue and that I would seek a refund of my money or an exchange if the door cannot be put right. At that point the service advisor admitted that she would not like it if she had spent £22K on a GTI to find that problem with the door and said that she would ask bodyshop to have a look at it instead.
I wrote a long email to the sales manager who sold me that car threatening to seek an exchange if the door could not be put right etc...and he wrote back to say that his very best technician is investigating the door and that he is good at dealing with difficult and "sensitive" issues!
I will get an update on Monday to find out what they can do. From what I have seen on the door it appears that the skin has come away from the frame and if you push this back in with your fingers everything seems to align up again. Perhaps some spot welding may be required or something...but who knows..I ain't no bodyshop expert.
I wonder if the same shoddy workmanship on these 3 door golf's is a prevalent problem with other 3 door golf GTI's or other models??
