doh, car failed its mot

me ?193 golf gti (found ?7 in ash tray) failed its mot yesterday. i bought it knowing it needed a gearbox so have changed that and also changed the back callipers.

heres what it failed on

battery loose - wasnt at all checked when i went to picl car up

air box not secure - how is that a fail, when you put a cone filter on to vauxhall 16v engines the whole end of the pipe wobbles about like hell

back passenger side caliper 19% opperation of brakes - knew it was dead

bottom arm bushes worn - needs 2 new bottom arms as you cant buy the bushes seperately according to the garage.

all in all means my 1985 gti 8v will have cost me about ?400 after its been taxed and mot'd. still not too bad really as its a nice car. tis lowered 60mil, 15' imolas, big bumpers, de-badged and single lamp grill with grill spoiler and 16v rear back lights. decent looking motor and it drives and runs well so im looking forward to picking it up next wednesday when its finished.

its the first car ive owned that has failed an mot in almost 7 years of driving. ah well.

That all sounds easy enough:

Battery - secure it yourself - can't be too complex.

Air box - as above

Caliper - Overhaul as required depending on how handy you are - unless pistons and / or seals are seriously buggered about an hours labour should rectify.

Bushes - The bushes can be bought seperately, however it takes so long to take the old ones out and put the new ones in - it's easier to buy new wishbones and install them instead.  Probably 2 - 3 hours labour for that task.

?400 all in including car - can't say fairer than that

ive done nost of the other repairs on it myself ive just had enough of fixing cars in this weather so its getting done by the local mot man.

he has quoted me ?50 plus parts to do it all, seen as he can get the bits cheaper than me it will probably work out only about 20 quid more expensive if he does it so why not.

yup 400 all in. its a 1985 b reg gti 8v but apart from the dent my neighbour put in my passenger door its in good condition. cant wait to have it on the road.

its been a good week, car passed mot and i got a new job. awsome. just need newcastle to win tomorrow and city to beat man u then its a good weekend......

Sad, sad news.....my golf failed yesterday.

Seized rear caliper
Hole in backbox
Exhaust blowing at manifold

 

So as the mot/tax/insurance all run out this month, I think it would be wise to resign poor old Betty to the garage for a few months... *sniff*

I figure I will save up till spring then I will have enough wad to have all the bits done AND a service

i got mine back before, went to get tax in the black beast up the motorway and man does that change gear light do my head in.

need to adjust the timing as its got a flat spot before 3k though apart from that runs great. lovely to drive indeed.

i think buying this golf was the best thing ive done so far in december.

speedydub - i got a nova that ive retired into the garage since june this year, probably wont see light of day till about march. it sucks when things fail, just lucky this golf was easy to fix. welding to be done on the nova. its all gravy
