Possible MAF faulty

Hi there,
I picked up a x reg Golf GTi 1.8T with 78,000 miles on the clock last week and it was running fine until the day after I got it home, then it started to loose power while accelerating, lumpy tick over and the occasional stall.
I've read a lot on this forum about the MAF sensors easily going and causing this sort of behavior.

I started her up this morning and we has really lumpy on tick over, fluctuating between 500-100rpm constantly. I tried unplugging the MAF sensor and started her up again, quite solid tick over then at 600rpm. I connected it back up and we went back to the erratic tick over.

After all this, I've convinced myself it's the MAF  and it should be replaced, is this something you all agree with as the problem?

The 1.8t suffers a few problems but the MAF is probably the place to start. I think oemparts sell the router(just the sensor) for about £40 for a bosch one which is pretty good going.

Thanks for that, I think the point about unplugging the MAF and then getting much better tick over indicated that it's the root of the problems. I do howeve have it in the garrage at the moment so I'll report back what they have to say.

An Update:

The car is still in the garrage, it;s been having 80,000 service and the cam belt has been changed.
They've done the service and the belt and fitted a new hydraulic cam belt tensioner which they claim for the part if £80.
However, when it was jacked up they had a bit of an accident, something in the workshop broke and something rather big has crashed into the front bumper of the golf and knackered it (big hole), so rather than trying to cover it up they have ordered a new bumper and said they will fit it ASAP and not charge me the £80 + labour for the cam tensioner as a good will gesture.

All this and they've not even tried to work out where the power loss problem is yet... only taken them 2 full days so far!
I'm hopping to get it back on Monday afternoon now.

To find out you power loss prob they will only plug it up to vag com, so its only a 2 min job

Yep, but they won't do that until after they've finished the Cam belt change...

Update: It's been confirmed that the problem was a fault MAF sensor, one was ordered but VW then lost it so another one is on order... maybe I'll get it back after 4th days!
