well the trip to france has fooked the gear box as far as i can tell! the car makes a odd noise on tick over and when you go for fifth it doesnt go in and makes a sh!tty noise! not good, still off to the show this sunday though! in me four speed! lol  :grin:

5th gear is usually the first to fail as it is furthest away from the oil supply. Chances are if you were to drain the oil you will find lots of metal in there :sad:

Those bits of metal will also be flying around and taking chunks out of the rest of the cogs in the gearbox. Personally I'd drop the oil from the gearbox and see what comes out before venturing too far with it. If you're lucky, I'm wrong :undecided:

Nah drop the oil and he might not get it going again :D hope your in the AA could end up with a 1 speed golf!

Nope your spot on Rich.... I've heard the same story a few years ago with a mates mk1 GTI gearbox - best to clear the oil out and clear all loss metal... I'd not drive it myself as you could end up with big hole in the gearbox and more damage to the rest of the engine, if gears are forced out of the gearbox....
