Stuttering & Excessive fuel consumption
« on: 28 May 2006, 23:10 »
Hiya!

I've just posted this in the garage but thought i'd post in here too....

I have a MK3 2.0 16V with major stuttering problems and i'm only getting about 18 miles per gallon!

Its had new leads, plugs, distributer cap, i have checked the ECU's and its had a full service. I took it to a garage and they put it on the diagnostics machine but it showed no fault. They think it could be the control panel... Does anyone have any ideas before i send that away for testing????

Cheers

Nat

air flow meter may be dirty, fuel pump and ecu relays knackered ( very common fault £35 fix) .

Thanks mate, I will check the air flow meter. Am i right in thinking if the fuel pump and ecu relays aren't warm then they don't work properly? I have checked them a few times and they've been warm.

Ive got the same problem just started with mine as it happens. Stutters around 2000rpm. Ive replaced the ecu relay at position 3 and and wondering if you got this sussed? I wouldve taken it into Dubsport but they ripped me off big time last time.

I have the same problem - stuttering  - running rich and a empty tank  :undecided: I've been told by many that it could be the lambda sensor - should be changing this on monday i'll let you know if it helps  :nerd:

Just been speaking to a m8 who had the very same problem on his GTE. He got an autoelectrician out who said it was a dodgy earth. 30 quid and it was fixed. Think I'm gonna give one a call.

just as a simple one - check the water temperature? If the thermostat is stuck open, it's going to run cool and thus rich. If the temperature sender is broken you'll get the same...

ECU or Fuel Injection relays cause stuttering and this fault is not shown up on code readers!
Any of the sensors should show up on code readers.

As for the 18mpg - as Dom says check the temp sonsors, sounds as if its running on full choke!
You havent by any chance got one of those so called "chips" fitted have you? The resistor thing that fools the system into thinking its running cold all the time????
