odd stalling issue

Hi guys, i've had a good read using the search function but can't see anything like my problem.
The problem is that my car (1990 mk2 16v) stalls when ever it feels like it. It starts fine from cold or even when its warm. You can leave it idling and you can hear it have a slight miss then carry on, then at some point the engine will just stop. You can start it straight back up again but the same will happen again. When your driving along it will do the same.

Any ideas?

does it stall on the approach to junctions etc?

sounds like the usual 16v problem of not having the CO% mixture correctly set to 2.0%

My valver did this and it turned out to be an air leak and mixture setting, but check all the vacuum pipes and the rubber boot between the air box and throttle body

its ok coming up to junctions, nice and stable.

i went for a drive in yesterday and the same problem happens. You are driving along with your foot just on the accelerator pedal and the rev counter drops to nothing then it will try to pick up again making you kangaroo or you have to pull over and start again with the key. It also does a massive bang out of the exhaust when it starts again and you have driven off (so big in fact that it has destroyed all of the baffles in the middle and backbox  ).

I'm wondering wether its something like the ecu?

Right then guys, i've had a look around the engine and have found that a pipe has come off something and i can't see were its supposed to go. Its a metal thing thats on the left rear side of the airbox if your stood in front of the car. It has a plug on one side and a small pipe on the other, this pipe has come off, were should it go to? And what does this thing do?
