Do what im doing (When i have the cash), Get a mk1 non-gti.... and then, when insurance is low enough either sell it and get a GTI, or if your feeling ambitious drop a larger engine in.

My first car was a Mark 2 1.6 driver, so have a look for a mark 1 driver then when you can afford the insurance get the GTI. Its worth the wait!
welcome to the forum by the way!

gettting a smaller engine mk1 for now, then when u can afford the insurance get the gti.

you can get a cheap mk1 and save for a gti, if you get a cheap mk1 you will spend loads more turning it into a gti.  I was thinking about that for a mk2, but i have decicided against it, also i have been told that the insurance will be more for a car which has been turned into a gti than just  a GTi

as above. try to find a mk1 driver ( 1300 cc ) . looks like a gti. if you mod it keep the standard bits so you can refit them and put the mods on a gti when you get one.
