1.6 head

think the head on my 1.6 driver is ready for rebuild also the head gasket is due , what i need to know is does any head from say the 8v gti fit ( retaining my spi etc ) ive seen a few reconditioned on ebay , may save me the hastle . thanks

Won't you have a problem because you're 1.6 runs on carbs, but the GTI will be fuel injection?

the 8v gti head will bolt strait on and the inlet manifold from your drivers head will bolt strait onto that, the heads are identical apart from the injectors which you can just leave there and they wont cause any hassle and also there isnt a hole in the gti head where the coolant channel runs from your inlet manifold, BUT you can drill it in,(tis really easy) you get a really decent power gain by doing all this as it has bigger valves and the cams better also less chance of pinking cause it has twin springs or something like that....and if anyone tells you youll NEED a weber to have a gti head its nonsence cause i kept my pierburg and it ran sweet!! your driver isnt single point injection, unless ive been missing something all this time... but the carb on it really kicks arse when its doing its job  i may be wrong about some of that but ive just did all of it a month or two ago and it all made sence then

nice 1 mate , looks like i might av a little project on my hands then , is taking the head off simple enough on these ? i think a valve my be on the way out on mine , it runs really rough when its cold ? good enough reason for a mod tho lol

the gain was really noticable, the car feels free if that makes sence, it takes the entire rev range with alot less struggle, goes alot faster, its easy to do, i learnd everything about doing it from talking on here, i have no mechanical knowlede before that so if i can do it anyone can, there was something about that timing, i think the flywheel has to be 6 degrees BTDC, but itll still run fine if you just line up the timing marks, just need a timing light to finish it i think but i got a garage to do that as i aint got a clue, but as for the head its just nuts and bolts at the end of the day,  from personal experience i advice not to seporate the downpipe from the exhaust manifold as when i put it back i never found a way to keep it sealed without it blowing even with new seal ring, clips and sealant, its really silly the way its done

unlike haribo (), follow my advise and at least fit a complete GTI zuast system including the manifold while the head is off, you'll see a nice gain even if you dont fit a GTI head

what exhaust would i use cos the head is off mk1 , does it fit the mk2 ?
any1 got 1 for sale ? pickin a head up friday so i might get crackin , also pickin up jetta f/end , 40mm springs and shocks so gona b well busy !!!
i was thinkin of bike carbs bit the inlet is a bit too close to the exhaust

i don think a mk1 gti head will fit......

If its a 1.8 GTI head it will fit, the 1.6 gti heads are different.  The other thing you have to worry about is the tappets, most MK1s will have solid tappets rather than hydro on the MK2.  Not that they're particularly bad, they just need to be adjusted is all.
