Normal Oil Temp?
« on: 24 May 2006, 09:29 »
I've been reading a few of the threads about normal oil temperatures.

Just lately my 16v has been getting upto the 100's, most is 104 i think.  Just after I had it serviced (about 8k ago) it was reading 80-90 all the time.

Is it anything to do with the oil degrading with miles or is it something to do with the engines oil cooling?

I know it supposedly says it's safe for it to go upto 145 in the manual but i just want to make sure it is common.

I've been using Castrol GTX to top up, does magnatec make much difference?

Yeah temperature is completely normal. it can differ greately dependent upon different sensors or even types of oil. Idealy the best oil for you will be vw's own syntha silver.

^ silver?  they told me for a valver that gold should be used. thats what i've got for topping up with.

as for the temp.. once the car is warmed my needle goes to about 70 or so after a few mins.. and after a few more mins sits slap bang pointing upwards at 90 ish.. and i never notice it move from there much. i know that if i rag it down the motorway i can get it up over 100.. but thats rarely..

Sounds like theres not much to worry about.

Overseer - Didn't think the 16v had an oil temp gauge with a needle, i'm talking about the reading on the MFA.

I'll have a word with the people who service my golf. It's due for a service soon anyway.

Yeah the gauge on the left is water temp.

Mine always sits at 90 although recently in traffic it's been about 95/100, comes down again when you get moving.
