Leaky, leaky
« on: 09 December 2003, 09:46 »
First of all, hi, this is my first forum post....probably not the last !!

I have just received my 1986 Golf GTi, which is terrific, only one problem, it comes with a free swimming pool. There was two inches of water in the carpets in the back. It is a five door. It seems to me that the problem is the rubbers around the actual window on both sides. Is it likely to be coming from anywhere else?? There was also a tiny bit in the wheewell in the boot (so obviously it is !)

There has obviously been problems with the windows in the back in the past as they are both gummed up with that black silicone stuff the window people use.

So if there is nowhere else that water commonly comes in, where do I get new window rubbers (not the door surrounds although they are probably needed as well, but the actual ones around the windy up windows !)

Thanks
Sean

feel the bottoms of the door cards. if they are damp then you have a common problem.

To sort this out you have to replace the door membrains with some home made ones that work better than the originals.

take off the door cards and check for split door seals.

Check for plugged drains on the sunroof. They will put alot of water into the car. Sit in the car and have a mate hose down the outside of the car and see if you can see where it is coming from. Welcome to the family  ;D

I recently sorted the membrain in my car, had water in the rear passenger side footwell and some in the front. I have taken the soundproofing out and it is currently drying in my bathroom :). It is not difficault to do, I used a heavy duty black bin back and cut it to size, then stuck in place with double sided tape n insulating tape. Worked a treat and no longer leaks, the water goes in down the windows and this was also easily solved. Wind the windows down and then Push the rubbers over to the inside of the car, these then sit against the window :)

Blue Mk2..."if the door cards are damp" LOL !!!!  ;DThey were so wet that when I took them out the actually dripped.  ::)No there is no question that I have a serious problem. T :-[he biggest difficulty is that some cowboy at some point in the past has simply forced the windows shut, stuffed thick rubber inside the window track (to push the window out, and then thickly siliconed the windows shut. I basically am going to need to completely strip the doors down, remove the windows, and all rubber and replace.

Is there somewhere not too expensive that i can buy the rubber??????

:oHi also check that the drain holes either side of the bulkhead under the black plastic panel under the bonnet are not blocked with leaves etc or it will fill up and the water will come in through the heater motor

My dad had a wet driver's side floor in his H reg Mk2. He traced the source of the water to the pipe for the rear windscreen washer fluid (runs from front to rear) which had split.
