Newbie - Just purchased myself a GTI Mk V
« on: 23 May 2006, 16:31 »
Hi All,

This is the first time I have ever thought of buying a GTI Mk V having previously been a loyal Audi A3 driver. In the end I couldn't cope with the pins and needle comfort of the A3 seats and opted for the GTI having read fantastic reviews of it all round and the test drive of course. I put my deposit down yesterday at the Volkswagen dealership in Basingstoke and this is what I will be collecting this Sat:

Golf GTI DSG
Diamond Black
3 Door
Leather interior
Arm rest (6CD interchanger)
9,000 miles - one previous owner

Dealer price was £22,000 but I managed to bring him down to £21,000 - not bad I guess! I find that the salesman can be better persuaded if you are a cash buyer and it is near the end of the month.

A couple of questions for you guys and gals:

1) I've been offered a fixed cost maintenance package for £26 p/m over 3 years (based on 10,000 miles pa) and it will cover almost everything in a usual service including brakes, pads, discs etc.. Considering that a normal service in London will be around £280 (not including discs and pads I'm sure) do you think this is worth buying into? I've been told that although the GTI has a long service interval my one would need to be reset as I will be doing mainly short stop and start town driving, so that the service indicator may come on after 10,000 miles or so instead of double that..is this true or usual salesman BS?!

2) Also, anyone had problems with "thrid party" sat navs in your new GTI becasue of the heat resistant windscreens (e.g. Tom Tom or AA Navigator etc.)?

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Zeb

P.S. Pics will be posted on the weekend

The service indicator is dependent on your style of driving so yes it can come on early if you do a lot of town driving.  I have a tomtom 500 in my car - Mk5 GTI - and it works perfectly.  As for the service agreement, I declined mine because I am part-exing in a year and do mostly motorway mileage but will not reach 20k miles and I am sure the service indicator will not come on before then... I suspect the dealer will service it for the next customer for next to nothing themselves.
