I have a 1990 1.6 driver, but want a gti. 

The driver is in really good condition, only minor problems.  But I want a GTi.... I dont have the money to go out and buy a gti, so was wondering what sort of price i would be looking at to fit a 8v engine in.

depends if your doing it yourself or are getting a garage to do the conversion.

It's certainaly do-able, but is it worth it? For the money you'll pay for a decent engine, then the cost to have it swapped (unless you are doing it yourself?), don't forget with the extra horsies you may want the vented discs on the front to aid stopping, and maybe a new rear brake disc set up from a GTI. At the end you'll still end up with a Driver, just with a better engine, and higher insurance than a standard GTI!

I think the main problem is swapping it from carb to fuel injection, although I'm not 100% sure about doing this.

It's worth keeping the driver and saving up for a good GTI, £800 - £1000 will get you a pretty good example, the only choice then is 8v or 16v. (8v all the way!). That'd defo be the way I'd do it, in fact I did a few years back!

I would like to have ago myself.... but that will take me alot longer.  and a lot of on the job learning, but i am sure you guys will help out.

I Didnt  realise the insurance would be higher.  I am a bit fussy, finding it hard to find a Black 3door 8v with little rust. and standard. maybe i have to be more paitents.

I know that doing a engine swap is a lot of hassel and there are loads of reasons why not to do it.

my other choice is get my old mk1 1.0ltr back and strip that down and have that as a project race car.

i personally wouldnt build a car u can buy, you would be better saving up and being patient till your perfect golf comes along (it will) and then buying that. then sell the driver and get a bit of your money back, thats pretty much what i did

I agree in that its not worth building somthing you can buy, so i want something a little different. my other thought is what can i do to the 1.6 driver engine?  carb it up?

yeah you can port polish cam carb lighten balance exhaust manifold etc etc like you would with any other engine. its the breathing thats important. you could also change the crank etc to make it a 1.8 or just bung the 1.8 on the bottom. far less wiring etc for that stuff and will give u a few extra ponies. sort the brakes and chassis then you will be laughing. then track it lol

Yeah, I think if you decalre it to the insurance, they will want want a bit more if it's had an engine transplant, I think more than a standard GTI.

I suppose you could go down the route of GTI cam, manifold, stainless exhaust, etc. But again IMHO you're throwing good money after bad, much better to find a good GTI as a base then maybe do some performane mods on that. Just ask HARIBO on here.

i cant decide what to do,,, i am thinking keep the MK2 driver as my daily car and do the mk1 race car.  nothing fantastic, just a bit of fun.....
