What wheels for mk2 16v?

I'm fancyin some nice new rims for my ride for the summer months to replace the standard RAs.

What does everyone recommend? With pics please if poss (even better if in red).

Not many seem to fit 17s to the Golf, it seems to be more 15 and 16s but wider. Is there a reason for this? Surely 17s with a lower profile tyre would look and handle better?

Is it just to keep the factory look? Or is it more that the Euro influence means 17s are not the done thing?

Can't be fagged rolling the arches and all that malarky for 8" rims or anything like that.

I did have lowered suspension with uprated bushes and roll bars but I've returned to OEM shocks and springs as we have a baby on the way and don't want to shake his brains loose just yet, so there's no probs with clearances but I don't want it to be a bone hard ride.

Any help/advice/opinions gratefully received.

Would like to do something different. I LOVE RMs but they are SOOOOO COMMON!

handle better on 17's? with lower profile rubber?......

erm, you want to be staying on 15's or 16's, the only golf on 17's ive riden in handled, well, like a barge. and it took about 3 minutes to pull away. why big wheels, why not stay at 15"?
 if you do want bigger i personaly prefer subtle rims, so it dosnt look like you've obviously crammed 17's under the arches.

It's true 17's don't handle as well as say 15's, but this is more to do with your suspension set up than anything. You can get it right and have it handeling well on 17's no worries. I mean are you going to be driving it like a track car, 50 round the bends?

Any decent 15s/16s then? Seen a few with nice polished 944 Turbo wheels that look good (used to have 944 turbo and loved the wheels), but again, reckon I'll be looking at arch work and I can't be arsed witn that.

Just want something to fit and forget.

Guess the reason I'm thinkin 17  is cos I'm formerly a Subaru nut and 17s on those are considered small, everyone has 18s whcih the cars handle best on.

Just need to adjust my mentality.

15s just seem so small when you are used to 18s!

spose if you're gonna put it like that, i find it weird on 14's cos ive always been into minis so im used to 10/12/13's!
