MK3 GTI NOT STARTING!!!
« on: 20 May 2006, 22:02 »
HI everyone i dont know wheteher anyone can help ive got a 1996 'N' reg mk3 GOLF GTI 2.0 8V and i did a full valet on the car inolving an engine clean which first of all i got the car up to temeprature then sprayed acid on the engine the blasted it off with a pressure washer sincew then it has been reluctant to start i bought a new distributor cap and rotor arm and that made no diference i went to VW and they said to cover the spark plug distributor area in WD40 so i did and it made no difference what happens is when you turn the key it starts then just turns off, i can get it to start what you have to do is when you turn the key instead of letting go when it ignites you have to hold it over for a few seconds and give it a few revs then let go of the key then it goes to turn off and then it just sparks into life if anyone can help it would be much appreciated thankyou, MIKE.

so the car will start and then cut out in a couple of seconds?

in the future I wouldn't warm the car up first as this will dry your cleaning product before it has a chance to break down the grime :)

I took the GTI to a garage today and they removed the coil ht lead to test if it had a spark and it had a good spark which indicates that the coil is fine we took the air filter box and hose leading to the throttle bodies and it appears that there is some oil in there, obviously the car still wont start without a fight and i dont really want to keep starting it by holding the key over because it wont be doing the starter motor any good any ideas on how to solve this would be very much appreciated, Mike.
