VR6 - PLEASE HELP MY CAR DIED IN A PUB CAR PARK!!!
« on: 07 December 2003, 00:43 »
Yes there are worse places to break down than a pub, a nice country pub at that!

-Mk3 98/R 8 valve GTI-

Clutch has been on its way out for a while now (see previous posts). Was gonna change it out this month. Anyway get into pub carpark just manouvering into space then *Bang* cluch pedal hits the floor and won't come back up and the car lurches forward and stalls.

Pushed the car into the space with my bird helpin (she weren't best pleased). Arranged a tow for tomorrow morn and went and had a beer or 2!!! Was thinkin about drivin it home usin the gears and no cluch, this can be easy if you get the timing and speeds matched jus right, but i really don't wanna screw the gear box too so a tow is safer.

The pedal moves fine up and down but there is no resistance and it won't spring back, so you can push it down then have to pull it back up. Looking in the engine compartment the cable seems fine and moves the arm no prob but there is no resistance. My guess is that the cluch has just fallen apart as the springs have died?!?! Could it be the master cylinder tho? The cluch has been juddering when engaging in first for ages which suggests worn springs - which is why i was gonna get it changed this month anyway.

Home now, car stuck in a village pub car park 15 miles away! Not gonna sleep tonight!!!

Any advice/help/support/ very welcomed!

Cheers guys and babes!

The pressure plate is broken probably, it is a spring loaded plate so these may have broken. You do not have a master cylinder if it is a cable clutch. Don't drive it! you risk screwing the box too. New clutch should sort you out.

Got car home in one piece this morning. My girlfriends dad is a tree surgeon and has a big ass diesil powered 4x4! I tell ya the Mk3 isn't a light car, but i think we all know that!

We towed it back with great success - minimum slackness issues - i was dead chuffed considering it was my first towing experience!

Initial inspections reveal that indeed the cluch is fu#ked!!! New cluch next saturday should sort it! Looking forward to a nice tight left pedal, its not been right since i bought the car in June.

Cheers VR6, you da man when it comes to the Mk3, do you go to any local meets? I don't live far from you!

Cheers guys.

So i'm sorting out the clutch on Saturday now.

I have to go to my local VW parts place tomorrow and order me some bits. Obviously i need to order a new clutch and i think this comes as part of a kit!

Are there any other parts i need that i might forget? VR6 you must have had a clutch change?

Cheers...

Yep i have indeed changed the clutch on my vr6, well i done it with Modulator, a bit of big job on my own! vr6 box is well heavy  ;)
VW don't sell it as a kit. I think the gti is the reverse clutch, so you will need a new pressure plate, friction disc, release plate, retaining ring, intermediate plate, and pressure plate bolts.
Are you gonna do the job yourself?

He he he...  :P

Just been to parts place and got a good deal on exchange! So i'm happy  ;D

Clutch does come as a kit with the exception of the large bolt, release bearing and the green cover at the end of the box that you have to prise off. I ordered these bits seperately. My lever arms and push rod are fine but i have got a a new spring as it was only 90p! Got a new cable too while i was at it!

Will let you know how it all goes!

I am def up for hooking up with you and Modulator tho...
