Mk1 Is running idle at 2000 rpm, Why
« on: 06 December 2003, 22:47 »
Have recently aquired a fantastic 1982 Mk1 golf with a mk2 dx 1.8 litre engine ;D. After a day of ordering timing marks and a general tidy up it started and sounded good. It would only maintain itself with plenty of throttle. The mechanic helping me noticed the lack of an idle adjustment screw. The hope was that this would reduce the revs but no. Today i have payed special attention to the valve timeing, i took the cam sprocket back a tooth replaced the cam belt and lined up existing timing marks. Still no joy it runs at 2000 recs if not higher ???. Please Forum what do you suggest, is their an air leak somewhere else or am i missing something obvious..

Regards an exasperated but happy gti owner.

If your idle screw is all the way in then you must have an air leak.

This 'mechanic' you used doesn't know where the idle screw is ???

Its on the throttle body facing toward the scuttle/bulkhead.

The idle adjustment srew has been purcased and fitted but the idle revs have not changed. Next was valve timing, done today but no change ::). So after going 50/50 then phoning a friend it was decided that another air leak there must be hmmmm ( bit of yoda ). Where should i pay attention, how do you adjust the ignition timing.

Cheers

Adjust the ignition timing with a strobe gun, then turn the distributor as necessary.

Cheers (golfvr6) will see if the ignition timing is not set as it should be.  Considering the state the car was in when i took ownership i am pleased it starts and is begining to take shape as a project thanks to e-bay. If anyone is interested i may have a set of mars red back seats for sale. I need the boot lining and a front badge.

Check the aux air valve, it's on the back of the inlet manifold. Has a black 2 pin electrical connector and 2 pipes on it, when the engine is up to temp, pinch closed the upper hose and if the revs drop, the valve is not closing. Check the electrical supply and earth, prob the valve tho....
