*Feeler* My Mk1 GTI 2.0 16v - any interest?
« on: 18 May 2006, 14:06 »
Hi,

I at a bit of a cross roads at the moment and am giving serious consideration to selling the Mk1, itÂ’s my most favourite car ever and of all the cars IÂ’ve owned, the one IÂ’ve kept the longest by a large margin!

IÂ’m hoping that by putting some feelers out I may be able to gain an idea as to what some enthusiasts may consider it to be worth, and whether or not there may be any interest in the little red car[:)]

The basic spec is as follows:

Body/ Exterior
1983 Mk1 GTI in Mars Red, the car is MOTÂ’d until next February (I think) and taxed until the end of July this year.

To look at the car is pretty much standard with the exception of a pair of smoked front indicators, the body work is in very nice condition, there are a few minor parking dents but nothing major. The car also has two small areas (about the size of a penny each) of surface rust on the roof, these havenÂ’t broken through the paint and are easily treated, otherwise there body work is really very good. The car was given a bit of a Campaign make over by the previous owner so has the corresponding green tinted glass all round. I have fitted OE main dealer number plates and the dealer logo bit that goes under the plate, they look much smarter than German plates in my opinion. The car also has a sunroof.

Interior
The inside of the car is standard Mk1 GTI, the Campaign bits include a working MFA and leather bound steering wheel. The interior is largely in very good condition with a perfect unblemished dash board and uncut door cards front and rear with the OE 6x4” front speaker pods. I have also just fitted a set of three VDO gauges (Oil pressure, Oil Temperature and Volt Meter) which all work perfectly and light up with the dash lights. There is also a Newton commercial leather gear gaiter and hand brake gaiter which look nice. The parcel shelf is the original uncut/ molested item.

Engine/ Running gear
The car now runs a 2.0 16v ABF engine with the correcy Mk3 golf Bosch Motronic engine management, the ECU has been remapped by Stealth Racing. The engine is stock internally. I have a 4 branch 16v conversion manifold mated to a Supersprint (I think) exhaust system, and a cone air filter which is hidden behind an alloy heat shield to help prevent the engine sucking in too much hot air. When the engine was fitted into my car I had all new belts fitted including the cam belt, the car has done maybe 4500 miles at most since the conversion.

The car made 158bhp at the wheels at TSR in February of this year which equates to about 193bhp at the flywheelÂ… which also equates to a bloominÂ’ quick Mk1[:D]

The car runs a standard Mk1 GTI 1800 gearbox which seems to allow it to accelerate very quickly , but also sit at 4000rpm at an indicated 80mph. Given the right piece of private road the car will pull right round off the clock to the needle stop. I have no idea what sort of speed it can do, but itÂ’s sufficient [;)]

Chassis/ brakes
The car has a TSR 270mm big brake conversion at the front and a healthy set of drums on the back. I had a set of braided brake lines fitted and the brake fluid changed at the same time.
I also have a full set of Spax adjustable shock absorbers and lowered springs fitted, from memory the car sits 60mm lower at the front and 40mm lower at the back, which looks just about right in my eyes. I also have Eibach ARBÂ’s fitted with polybushes front and rear. The car does handle quite nicely[]
The car currently sits on a refurbed set of P-Slots with the correct ‘Pirelli’ centre caps and a set of 4 Pirelli P600 (I think) tyres which are all in very good condition with loads of tread left

I absolutely love this car, it will greatly pain me to sell it. However a pending house purchase and marriage will soon be eating up all my money so now may be a good time to let the little car go if a suitable offer was to come up.

Please note, I have put this car together with a lot of love and attention and I try to ensure it always gets treated well, as such I donÂ’t expect to hear rude commentsÂ… However if you are interested or have some constructive comments please do let me know or drop an email to rob.crutchfield@awa-uk.com, IÂ’ll be able to pick them up over the course of today.

The car is currently insured on a classic policy with all the above modifications and my points/ accidents declared, the policy cost me £285 fully comp.

The car has an agreed value of £3500.

(I apologise if some of the formatting of this has gone awry, I put it together in Word)

If you have any questions please ask!

Cheers,

Rob

(Mods,  as the car isn't actually for sale I didn’t want to put it in the for sale section, however please feel free to move this to another section if you deem necessary).
