electric help....
« on: 16 May 2006, 21:41 »
i know sh!t all about electrics

i need to wire up my electric recaro's, i have the looms which ends in a brown and a red, i've tested them buy just sticking them on the terminals of a battery and that worked fine. how do i now incorporate them into my fuse box? i assume they should be fused?

also i have electric mirrors to wire in, they are genuine vag and i have a corrado loom as a certain person who got hold of them for me forgot to take the loom  now this loom ends in two negative browns and two green/whites which i assume are live. these will need fuse-ing, how?

finally, i have electric windows to make a loom for. the old loom was cut after the switches and motors so is it a matter of wiring up the same colours to the same colours and then (again) wiring them to the fuse box some how?

cheers

from memory your car is 90 spec Joe so the permanant live terminals are on the top right of the fusebox (as you look at the relay side). There are 2 smaller terminals and 2 large ones which will probably be in use. As for earthing the loom anywhere will do.

Mirrors... The green/white ones (I have one rather than 2 here) are used for the heated part of the mirrors. Commonly linked to the heated rear screen switch so they come on at the same time as the rear screen, although if you put power down that wire with a separate switch it'll let you run them independantly to the HRS. As for the 2 browns  :undecided:. At first guess I'd say someone has messed with this loom as there is only 1 brown on my loom which hasn't been messed with... I shall have a loom at mine tomorrow and let you know which pin off the switch should be powered and which should be earthed.

If you want to splice the heated part of the mirrors into the HRS then you'll find the same green/white off coming off the HRS switch which you can join onto.

Windows are pretty much as you said.  agan you'll have to come off the smaller live terminals on the fusebox. you can get a tidy little fuse and relay which will mount nicely on top of the fusebox and keep it looking OEM :)

It sounds to me like you are missing the central bit of the leccy mirror loom, either that or you are colour blind ;)
There should be 1 brown, 1 green/white and one yellow/black.  Brown wires should be earthed, green/white connects to the heated rear screen output wire and black/yellow goes to an ignition live source.  You may find a spare plug behind the fusebox with a green white wire, but this wasn't present on my pre-90 spec Driver or post 90 GTI, however it was on a LHD Corrado I pinched the loom from.
The leccy windows should have a relay and thermal fuse (or a normal 30amp fuse if you cant get a thermal one) on a holder clipped above the fusebox, plenty of VWs in the scrappy have these so you have no excuse not to go and grab one ;)

Exact OEM wiring locations on a post 90 MK2 if you want to be extra anal (like me )
Leccy mirrors:
blk/yel - D/11 (this means plug D, pin 11)
grn/wht - K/12
brn - earth 'claw'

Leccy windows:
Relay pin 86 - blk/yel - D/9
Relay pin 30 - red - Fuse - red - Y/2
Relay pin 85 - brn - earth 'claw'
Relay pin 87 - blk red - To switches

Leccy seats:
Red - Y/1
brn - Earth 'claw'

And heres a pic of the back of the fusebox to help you locate the plugs:

good work lads! well mine is a funny car, its all 90 spec apart from the wiring?! but as they aren't overly tricky by the sounds of it i'll wire them up as you said to lives etc, and scour the scrappys for the extra blocks that slide on top. any idea what the realy for the windows is numbered as? ideally i'd like to find a car with electric windows and take the loom to keep it as factory as possible!

Ah, thats different then!  The correct factory locations for the leccy bits are:
Leccy mirrors:
blk/yel - G/1
grn/wht - E/15
brn - earth 'claw'

Leccy windows:
Relay pin 86 - blk/yel - G/1
Relay pin 30 - red - Fuse - red - P
Relay pin 85 - brn - earth 'claw'
Relay pin 87 - blk red - To switches

Leccy seats:
Red - Not sure about this one, I'd say 'P' as well
brn - Earth 'claw'

Fusebox rear:
