keys???
« on: 16 May 2006, 13:57 »
I have recently purchased a 1991 mk2 gti. I didn't receive the priginal keys, just some cheap 'cut' ones. My old 1989 golf had the round style key with the metal/chrome VW emblem in the centre. Is it this style for 1991 cars? Or is it the ones like the mk3's? Cheers, Huw.

Is your car an 8v or 16v? I think the 8v had the round style key until the end of the model life (I could be wrong though) however my 1991 16v has a chunkier plastic bodied key with a blue/white VW emblem on the side. I also have the complete original key with the 16v badged cover that goes over the key when it's in your pocket, that's reserved as my spare these days though.

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

You can't get the vw chrome key anymore from VW only for the mk1

You can still get the 16v one though, got one recently looks great about £18

"NASTY SOUND FROM FAMILY FORTUNES" our poll says no!!!

Actually they are the mk2 keys - they also fit mk1's (close but no cigar )

Not quite MK1MADJ ;)
The MK2 uses the AH profile key, most low end models got the black key with the chrome VW symbol, and the later 16v I think got the chunky keycover with the torch in it.  Or perhaps it was an option?

The MK1 uses a HV profile key, which is completly different.

The exception to this rule could be the MK1 Campagn, which might have had the AH profile key, as well as the later cabbies :)

Edit: Forgot to mention, if you want a key blank get yourself on ebay, loads going for cheap.  I got a pair of 'hong kong specials' and they look identical to the original keys, but the metal blade isn't quite as good quality, it can bend if you arn't carefull.  There were several genuine AH keys on there last time I looked, also give http://www.gpcvwaudi.com a ring, they have a ton of chunky 16v keys on egay at the moment!

:undecided:???? yeah I know???  Mk1's used "HV's" & Mk2's used "AH" - "AH" Are still available both in shiny black/silver or plastic with a torch (or without  :nerd:), you can even buy a complete lock set new.

The "HV" ones used by the mk1 have not been available for at least 10 years - thats how long i've been looking  :smug:, but the "AH" Mk2 keys seem to work in the Mk1 locks (probably cos they're so knackered )

.......so er? whats your point?  :undecided:

How much are the blank keys? The round ones or torch version? GPC are selling 16v and G60 ones for £15. Are they cheaper from VW?

I don't really know what my point was now :undecided:
Anyway get on ebay, there was a guy selling HV 'campaign' key blanks for good money!

Looking at ETOS, it lists a price for a HV profile key so it doesn't look like it has been discontinued!  Though saying that I can't say what type of key it actually is...

I bought a new AH key from Vw recently, The same as a MK4 key, with the torch, and it was just under £15, cutting was free
