First 1/4 mile.
« on: 15 May 2006, 21:43 »
Just booked 4 trips up the 1/4 mile @ Inters. Never done it before. Don't want to make a t*t of myself.
Any advice on a launch technique would be good, or should I just boot it & hope for the best?
Will be using my standard VR6. :undecided: :undecided:http://

sit there with the handbrake on and get the biting point and have the revs around the 3k mark, (this will need you to decide the ideal for you, as they varie on each car, so use the first run as a practice) basically don't let it hit the limiter, and try not to let it spin up on the start line.

For an optimal time, have minimal fuel in the car, and take out anything that you can - carpets, sub boxes etc. check tyre pressures are even and not too high.
i'd go for 4,000 rpm, hold clutch on biting point
don't slip the clutch
dont lift too much if the fronts spin, some people take their foot off!  1/2cm to a cm for 1/2 to 1 sec should do it.
As the rev needle hits red, change gear. If you hit the limiter, change gear.
make sure you are not giving it full power until the clutch is fully up.
A little clutch buning smell is ok, you're making it work hard!

Don't accidentally put it in reverse on the line. i saw someone do this at inters in about 98 and he flew backwards and nearly took out a marshal. funniest thing i ever saw!

oh yeah, also its important to let the car warm up properly beforehand, and also let it cool down for a bit after. if there's a little perimeter road you can drive round for a mile of two its worth it.
