it depends what your after from your car

i had a mk2, and they are a mint drivers car, throw it into any corner no worries,

then i bougtht a mk3, because i wanted more comfort, ABS so i dont kill myself, and all the little tricks.

i still really miss my mk2 when going down the lanes etc, but on the motorway and round town the mk3's just an easy going car.

tryin to get my gf to get a mk2 8v so i can drive it too.

Can't think of a funy or whitty comment

If you want economy and good MPG then i'd say get a Mk 3, if you want fun and endless pleasure but with less economy and MPG then get a MK 2.

My ex used to have a mk3 gti, it was nice and comfy with plenty of luxuries, however I much prefer the mk2, especially if you really enjoy driving ;)

Having had 3 mk2 16v's and 2 mk2 8v's my preference is the 16v anyday but that is just my view.

MK2 16V!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

Nothing wrong with mk3's very comfortable car and reletivly quick, I have an 8v mk3 and love it to bits could be quicker but what car dosen't need to be made faster.
I only paid £2200 for my 65k colour concept so theres plenty of mk3's about in your price range

Mk2's are certainly the better drivers car tho but finding a truely good one is beggining to get tough

It all comes down to what you want easy comfortable cross country cruiser? Get the mk3, Quick, nimble chuck it around counrty lanes then try to get a nice Big bumper mk2

The choice, as they say, is yours, by the way I still miss my mk2's aswell

I'm not sure really, I have a mk2, and sometimes feel its lacking a bit, but most of the time love it, just it needs to be a little more comfortable, but at the same time needs to be quicker, so I'm considering either a 2 litre 16v on throttle bodies or a 2 litre 8v with an Eaton M45. Oh, with a mk3 dash and some Cobra Recliners...

But in their natural guises? Either a late 1.8 mk1 or a 16v mk2, although I'm looking at this from a truly performance perspective, on the comfort, economy blah blah blah go for the mk3, i guess.

There's nothing wrong with the comfort levels in a Mk2, so long as you get one with seats in good condition.

I've had both a Mk2 16v and a Mk3 16v, and I would say that if you want creature comforts and a more modern feel, go for the Mk3, and the 16v is a good car performance wise, but the Mk3 16v is prone to more electrical problems than the Mk2.
The Mk2 is definately more of a drivers car and 16v engine is great (though it likes the chance to get out on the open road), and if your suspension isn't too hard and the seats are in good condition, then it shouldn't be any less comfortable than a Mk3.
Plus you can get a Mk2 with most of the electric gadgets like the Mk3, like PAS, electric windows, mirrors, Central locking etc.

2k would get a stonking Mk2 16v, but also if you look properly, you can find a decent Mk3 16v.

I am going to look at a mk2 8v at the end of the week, have been told it is mint except for needing a new front wing which my mate said he can sort out. The asking price is £800 which would leave me plenty to smarten it up
