I am about to buy my first golf gti, I have about 2k. Which mk should I go for to get the best in performance and reliability?

MKII I'd say. 16v for speed or 8v for less insurance. Both are great cars and don't be lead to believe that the 16v is the only one to have, the 8v is a very competant car.

Personally for £2k you can buy a minter in the world of the MK2....it is all about what you want it for though.......

A good MK2 will be VERY reliable, as will most Golfs to be honest.

There, that is my 2p's worth

is there much difference in performance between the 8v and the 16v? Also is the mk 3 a let down like i have been led to believe?

The MK3 lost a lot of the key features that made the MK2 such a great car, it almost became too soft....

Between the 8v and 16v?

That is a question that has had so many debates on here, I run the risk of starting another one.....Personally, I like the 8v but that is only because I kinda know what I am doing with that engine.....there IS a performance difference on paper but it is a case of driving both and deciding for yourself which suits your style of driving better

I have both a 8 valve and a 16 valve and prefer the 16v but the 8 valve is still a great car to have, the low down torque is good.

Either way mate you are onto a winner and with £2k for a budget. You should be able to pick up a Mark 3 16valve for £2k if you can find one in case you want something a bit newer.
