Just started today - when accelerator is depressed, response is hesitant/jerky/non-smooth, not as much power at high revs, and can't get above a certain speed in 4th or 5th. What's the likely cause - MAF, coil pack, TPS/ throttle body?

Possibly related: noticed a rapid clicking noise (increases with engine speed) coming from an unidentified unit mounted on the o/s inner front wing - between the washer reservoir and the header tank - one small vac pipe comes out into the engine (from a Bosch thing), with an electrical connector and another pipe which runs down - is this something to do with emissions control? Should it be clicking?

Many thanks, guys.

What car is it? have you got a picture of the area?
Check out the common problems but if its a 1.8t there are quite a few to go through. Most likely maf, ignition parts, o2 sensor, cracked vacuum pipe, coolant temp sensor etc. I dont know bout the clicking so maybe better to get it plugged into a vag com equiped computer and get the codes read.

Now cured. Problem was, as suspected, the air flow sensor. I took it out yesterday and cleaned it - no difference. Was only 85% sure it was this, so got it VAG-com confirmed at the main stealers. Cost - £65 for part, £39.00 for labour (grrr).

I got the same kind of problem with my 2.0 GTI as well. I was just wondering what yours is like now you have replaced it.

Thanks

The difference is truly remarkable. The car is now extremely smooth, no hesitations in any gear, and much more responsive to throttle, gear changes, etc. I suspect the sensor was going down hill for quite a while.

The dealer says the AFM can cause a number of running faults.
