Power Loss
« on: 11 May 2006, 19:22 »
i was driving on A1 today towards sheffield, at about 80mph and some trailer pulled out in front of me,
i hit the brakes and slowed down to 40mph, since then it seems liek ave lost a load of power, it feels liek the turbo isnt kicking in.

i t barely gets to 80mph now and it doesnt seem to shift...

the car is a 02 plate SE TDI 100PD its only got 38000 miles on it so i doubt the turbo is knackered however it does feel as it is..

the car doesnt seem to pull away and it just doent have  the kick in it.. it barely gets to 80mph and that too after about 2 mins of foot to floor from 70mph, usually u can feel the power in 3rd gear getting up to 60 and 4th gear u can feel the power...

any ideas what is wrong with this is a right headache one day before my final exams, pls help. thanks

sounds like your MAF sensor m8y
give GSF a call if you can and they do an exchange part for around £100 (- the exchange, approx £20)

i wish vw would sort their act out and do something with these units as they are always breaking down!!

if you got low miles, is it still in warranty???

take it too your local stealers and give it a cheecky one

good luck bud

i doubt its under warranty its an 02 plate u sure its the MAF, my mate todl me its the back brakes seizing up once i locked the brakes, however it still rolls down the hill in neutral..

what about this limp mode thing do u think it could be that?

how much wud a MAF unit cost is it hard to fit.

:undecided: dont know about the back brakes bud, esp if it rolls ok!

im sure there is summin you can do to the MAF, like disconnect it for a while and see if the revs dip, i saw it on this forum somewhere...cant remember where sorry.

the symptoms sound just like when my MAF went thats why i suggested it, my first one went @ 41000 miles.

very easy to take off, its 2 or 3 screws...the MAF is located between the air box and the engine... it has a plug comming out of it (disconnect this) and when removed it looks like a sieve/grater.

on that website they are 70ish quid but i dont know how much p+p would be...

as for the limp mode, it could be i guess, but you would prob need vagcom to diagnose that  :undecided:

otherwise you could wait on here for others to post...sorry i cant be of much  help m8, i know how frustrating it can be.

glad u appreciate the frustration i got a big exam tomorrow and hence was driving back to uni a day earlier, now my head is thinkign more about the bl00dy car then my exam.

the MAF sensor is it easy to replace can i do it DIY style or do i need to take it to a mechanic,

is there anything special that i need to do liek disconnect battery and earth things or is a simple two bolts unclip the wire and install it in the right way round, as am pretty scared with touching things under the bonnet.

also do they seem to go around the same sort of mileage.

how much wud i expect to pay for it to be doen by a mechanic.

easy to do, diy it, as above
a mechanic would charge you at least £30 on top of part and be done in oooooooooh about 3 mins

just undo the screws, un plug it, take out, put new one in, do the screws up, and plug it back in....

no need to mess with batteries or earths etc and you'll feel the difference straight away if it is the MAF.

it really is easy.... dont worry about it m8y, if you are worried about it, get it vagcommed to diagnose it..... cos i might ( only might) be wrong

btw what you studying??

You will need the security torx bit i think t15 or t20. To find out which MAF you need have a look on the MAF housing and it should list two parts a VW number and a bosch one on top. there had to see without taking them off as there on the bulk head side under where the connector is. As for buying one i think dealers now sell the sensor and prices have come down.
