Best place to sell a Mk5 GTI?
« on: 10 May 2006, 15:38 »
Hi there,

This is my first post on the forum - it looks like a great source of info, hence my post....

Unfortunately a house move and job move to one with a company car mean I'm looking to sell my mk5 GTI and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to where to advertise?

Also what do folk think a realistic asking price would be?  The main dealer prices seem ridiculously high - very close to the new prices (and no doubt their trade prices ridiculously low).  But does £18,500 sound about right for a 10,000 mile 3-door GTI with leather and a couple of other bits and bobs (folding mirrors and metallic paint)?

On a side note - aren't the Mk5's terrific?  I've driven a good range over cars over the last 14 years and the GTI is right up there as a really competent car thats versatile and can still put a smile on your face!

Really appreciate any input.

Regards,

Tom

Very topical question for me this month.

Went to the stealer last week for a price on upgrade to R32 (following the Doc's postings wetting my appetite) then seeing several in the flesh.

My current model is exactly 12 months old - only 5k miles - Leather, 18in wheels, Graphite Blue - CD Changer, in mint con (lovingly  cared for).

Well - no discount at all on the R32 and 17.5 K for mine !!! so for the R32 spec I wanted it was my car plus 10k !!!!!!
So now waiting for the 30 year model (or I will need to sell a kidney for the R32).

Thanks chaps.  I guess we are at that difficult point where the cars are still young and so close to the new price, which means people may decide to just spend a bit more and buy a new one.  The other problem is that it will probably be dealers that show the most interest, but they are professional buyers who will always drive a hard bargain - offering trade or a bit more for a part exchange.

The frustrating part is that as the cars are nearly new, assuming no crash history, the cars are absolutely fine to buy privately, but, as they are also relatively new, people would pay three or four thousand pounds more for the same car from a main dealer!

I'm going to take my chances and advertise in autotrader.  Main dealers will always want a 1 year old GTI in good condition, so I'll just use them as a last resort - which is fair enough given the prices they are prepared to offer assume you are desparate to sell!

When you've sold your remaining kidney Doc which other orga is best to sell while having the minimum amount of effect on your body?  Or does it depend on the individual?  If it does, then I will remove my brain and sell that for my Anniversary Edition GTI because that won't make any difference to me
