So where is the best place to get a GTI??
« on: 10 May 2006, 14:24 »
The $64,000 question really.  Stealer or broker?  Import or not??

Most stealer (no offence VMD!) don't seem willing or able to provide any discount on a GTI, even on the finance deals they will do.  This means paying top dollar for the car.

looking through numerous sites on the web, brokers are offering 5 door GTIs for less than 20k, some as low as £18,500.

Now I know the old argument of personal service etc from the Stealer but is that really worth paying on average an extra £2k for??

Anyone have any experience of brokers??

Got mine through a large importer - get a discount of 15% on UK list...too big a deal not to give it a go. Car is duly pre-inspected and stamped by an official VW dealer in Holland so whilst not UK, it has been through all VW's normal checks etc and is exactly the same car  coming off the production line as a UK bound one. Personally I have always steered clear of imports before as I know it restricts the future selling-on market (but most of my cars have been in fairly small markets to start with) but I thought for the size of discount and the size of the future resale market on Golfs that it had to be worth a shot!

Dealer all the way - IMHO its not worth the risk / worry of buying from a broker. If you pay your deposit to a dealer and they then go "pop" you will get VW UK honouring the deal / deposit.

If its a broker - you would have no chance / hope

With dealers and brokers struggling this year - I speak from very close experience on this one !

Motorpoint

I got mine there - car a parallel import from holland - exact same as UK spec - 3k off UK dealer price

Obviously check with them the full spec before you buy

True - but not if you deal with a reputable broker...mine has been in the business for 15 years and deals regularly with other people I know...I agree I wouldn't go to some random chap who I didn't know

Ive just briefly looked at them, but drivethedeal.com seem like an interesting bunch. They never take your money and after contacting them you deal with a UK main dealer. Full warranty so service from dealer and after sales arn't compromised. discounts seem to be around £1000.

But its probably not as clear cut as that, although, if your dealing directly with a dealer and only paying them, whats the difference?
